I think my draft board was right about me in 1962. Right to classify me mentally unfit for military service.

I saw young men in the Navy boot camp that were unfit for service. But before they were released they were put thru a regimen that bordered on a form of insanity. I witnessed one of these young folks running around a table tilted radically where an artillery shell rolled quickly down after the kid released it... he ran as fast as he could to the other side in hopes of catching it before it hit the floor. Once the shell hit the floor, the young recruit would have to repeat the act over and over and over again. The table was no more than 4 feet square. I never saw him catch the shell. The discipline left the fellow drained, scared and without any hope of ever serving his country. That was only one story of many who chose to join.

I never made it to boot camp Cecil. I lost my student deferment 1962 and I was called up for my pre induction physical to see if I was fit enough to be drafted. This was not long after the death of my father a time in my life when I could not fall asleep at night without imagining a shotgun tucked up under my chin and my finger on the trigger. I would lie there contemplating oblivion and drift off to sleep. I never had to imagine the click of the mechanism it was just so comforting to lay there with that imaginary shotgun under my chin. And I would doze off to sleep. What the doctors checked me out at Ft. Hollibird, which was an army base in Baltimore where they did the physicals. When they heard about that shotgun they decided I was not suitable.

I hear that the army has relaxed their standards since then.

Never bothered me much being four F expecpt for when I was taking flying lessons in Michigan about a year later. I was all set for my first solo flight but I had to take a FAA physical first. When they found out I was classified four f they would not let me fly. Which was disappointing. I wanted to get my pilot's license so I could join the gliding club. Got to have a private license to fly gliders. Even though they are not powered. I thought of riding the wind appealed to me. Later on I got into sailboats, which is kind of the same thing. A sail is really a wing.

Then after the Gulf of Ton kin incident in 1964 I felt it was not right that other men were being drafted so I tried to enlist because I wanted to do my patriotic chore in Vietnam. I tried to convince the draft board I wasn't crazy anymore so let me join up. They raised my draft status from 4F to 1Y. IY meant if the Russians ever invaded Cleveland they would call me up. Later I joined the Quakers and became a conscientious objector. A four F conscientious objector does that make me special?

Yeah it sounds like in sanity to me too Cecil. I suppose it was to discourage anyone else for trying to get certified. This was during the Vietnam War I guess.

Yes... 1965

My own father had passed away about two weeks before I witnessed those young men trying in vain to become warriors for the cause. My father was a lifelong Army soldier who finally succumbed to a heart attack after several years of heart problems. I had enlisted in the Navy to avoid the draft and combat in Nam. I'd been in boot camp for around a month when notified of his passing and went home for a week... returned and assigned to a group waiting to join another class of recruits. The incident I spoke of was right next door to the barracks i was in while waiting for reassignment. Freaky but sad shit. Depressed me along with my dad being gone. Anyhoo... life is for the living no matter how we feel about those who have passed on before us. We'll have plenty of time dead.. a hell of a lot more than living, eh?

Are you familiar about the Buddhist story about the blind turtle on the bottom of the ocean who surfaces every thousand years and just happens to put his head through a hollow log floating somewhere on the surface, how rare that would be.

I heard it on an audio tape, the one I was telling SooZen about.

Love that tape SooZen. I listen to it a lot, sometimes when I go to bed I fall asleep to it. It had the bit about the blind turtle on the bottom of the ocean who rises to the surface every thousand years and puts his head through a wooden ring floating on the surface.

The tape is a hodge podge of stuff. I have googled the story and got a lot of hits

This is the closest I think, but I am not sure the turtle was searching for the log. He just come up to get a breath of fresh air and happens to stick his head through the hollow log. I could be wrong about that., just the way I interpreted it.

A Blind Turtle in Search of a Floating Wood

In the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, the Buddha used the metaphor of a blind turtle in a vast ocean to explain how difficult it is to be reborn as a human being and at the same time to have the chance of hearing the Dharma.

Suppose there is a small piece of wood floating on a vast ocean. The wood has a small hole the size of which is just enough for the head of a turtle to pop into. There is a long-lived sea turtle in the ocean. Once every one hundred years, this turtle comes out from the bottom of the ocean and pops his head into the hole of the wood.

To be able to hear the Dharma is just as hard as for the blind turtle to encounter the small piece of wood on a vast ocean and let its head go through the hole in the wood piece.
