bad poem no 3

NOT SMART ENOUGH

not smart enough to stay with my first wife
not smart enought to legally marry my second
not smart enough to avoid prosecution
not smart enough to take up an off broadway
producer's offer to manage his bed and breakfast
in cape may and write plays all winter
or to meet him for coffee in the city
not smart enough to tell the mother of my second
son to fuck herself when she said she'd leave
if i managed the b and b
not smart enough to publish all the books i have
malingering in this apartment
or smart enough to own a house by now
or smart enough to get on the roads and say
screw the anxieties
not even smart enough to choose the woman who
cried in the supermarket parking lot on the phone
when i sent her away in favor of the woman who
would leave me a few weeks later
not smart enough for a hundred things i should
have done right or at least better
so that what's left is miles and trane playing milestones
and a cat that bites me every chance
she gets
