I wrote this a couple weeks back for a friend with extreme cabin fever. Today it's 50F and sunny and maybe winter is finally there in the rear view mirror....
winter's lost its luster,
there's little left to love
and heads despair of hats,
and hands grow tired of gloves
the shovel's too familiar
the holidays long gone
the gutter's full of icicles
the furnace soldiers on
but planetary motion brings
a turning of the tide
winter may be hanging on
but spring won't be denied
as I walked across the tundra
in a blizzard yesterday
I heard a robin burble,
I heard a cardinal say
wet cheer! wet cheer!
and it filled my heart with hope
for winter's nearly at the end
of its long and frozen rope.
now is the discontent of our winter
yes, let the thaw begin. That's an awful long run from October through March. Cabin fever for sure. I think we can all relate (well, except maybe for Arcadia, and her S. American summer swelter...)
