soon it will be easter

This is Constantine's artlog. He posted his poems in his own artlog forum for several years. He named the forum "Constantinople" and described it as "A byzantine journey through life's labyrinth."

jumped ship in smyrna
and bribed a fisherman, beneath
the light of the turkish moon
take me to samos
he left me on a pebbled beach
with my duffle and some sea urchins
in vathi, i bought a miniature donkey
yasmine was her name
and a chicken too, esmeralda
the chicken rode on the donkey's back
and i walked beside them
from village to village they know me
sometimes, a tourist will ask
who's he?
oh, the donkey and chicken poet guy!
he's cool, we like him
the children run to meet us
they bring feed for esmeralda
pears and carrots for yasmine
who bats her eyelashes
and snuffles their tiny hands
i read a poem or two
ancient greece and the heroes
the war against the turks
and we speak of our grandfathers
how tough they were and where they are buried
for years it has been this way
soon it will be easter
