In the book": "Breakfast Served Any Time All Day-Essays on Poetry New and Selected" by Donald Hall, one of the essays is titled: 'The Vatic Voice'. In this essay, Hall defines the idea of vatic as "the Greek word for the inspired bard. . ." He feels that this voice "speaks only in dream, often in unremembered dream." He goes on to explain how this idea of a voice has a place in how we think of poetry:
Hall wrote:
It is the vatic voice (which is not necessarily able to write good poetry, or even passable grammer) which rushes forth the words of excited recognition, and which supplies what we call inspiration.
Two characteristics that distinguish the vatic voice from normal discourse are that it is always original, and that we feel passive to it. We are surprised by it, and we may very well, having uttered its words, not know what we mean. We must find ways to let this voice speak. "

Also see the "Vatic Voice" presented in a topic:
in my "Life in the Horse Lane" column, called: "Writing With the 'Vatic Voice' " I think we all use a similar technique without even realizing it .
Thanks to revolutionrabbit for an inspirational moment. Maxims, I say, to be used in snacks for the Empire. A little advertisement won't hurt.

ah, yes the bardic, or vatic voice, the one that maybe a remnant of the Bicameral mind, or some other word not invented yet, you know the Vedic book was written in the eithers before it was ever written down the centuries, all those languages that once were passed on through the Bards, that spoke through the Soma voice, more recently rediscovered in the Dada voice, a whole book written on just the meaning of voice, or the voice of meaning, or the meme of the meme of meme(hey i sound like Kerouac!) the roots of first utterance, as was spoken in the beginning was the word, now turn it around the why it came in...In the Word was the beginning...of the Word. And the word was...what it is...man! ah yes those Goddess names, surrounded with all those other strange sounding votive voice, what is strength? the only fear is fear itself? those clever Stoics.Poetry what is that? let it be born, kiss the joy!

Nobody likes to search. Too much trouble and time. Links work better.
Here's the link to Rabbit's book -
http://www.amazon.com/Gone-Hallucinogen ... 875&sr=1-1
Oh and also, if you add the "http://" to your blog address, the address as it appears in the browser window, you will get a clickable link
Here's a link to revolution rabbit's blog:
http://revolutionrabbit.blogspot.com
Otherwise people need to copy and paste and nobody has the time for that.
