i need a crash course in hip hop
i've managed to check out Snoop Dogg, Usher, Eminem and Missy Elliott, but i've been told that Usher and Missy are no longer cool enough.
What's cool?
i'm serious - i need to bring some stuff to students, prepare cds and readings and it's a lot of work. i need to put the right names down.
Can anyone help me?
Also- i'm talking about kids from age 13 - 15, so the less pimp and weed talk the better

Lrod...Alicia must know. I know my folks were baffled at what I was listening to when I was her age. They know who Jagger is now. Hah! She is fortunate to have you and Dor for mentors and encourgement to seek what she likes and judih is smart to go to the source.

that better have been sarcasm, LR.
You watch american idol? Haha!
Christ.
Hip Hop isn't an art form it's a Marketing Vessel for Sports wear and expensive lifestyles.
Alicia's list threw up one or two names I'm not familair with. But as for the rest of them, there's only one interesting inclusion. Pharrell Williams. If that's the guy in N.E.R.D. then he's pretty interesting. They seem to do clever things with mixing genres and creating new sounds (relatively new).
Just play the kids some Tom Waits, Jude. And pretend it's hip hop. Or Cptn. Beefheart, he has some pretty nifty sounding beats. just play it at the wrong speed.
The only rap music worth it's salt was the stuff I listened to when I was a wee boy. I had to listen to it with the volume down. NWA Straight Outta Compton. The black man's Nevermind the Bollocks.

I know when I was a kid, I didn't want anyone telling me what to listen too, especially an adult... I think it's strange that anyone can know what is best for everyone else and are the arbiters of taste. I say let Alicia and her generation choose what they like even though this old woman has no clue as to what it is she may like about it. Maybe it will sink in my thick skull in a few years and her and her tribe can have a laugh when I am humming it in the supermarket. Hah!

Thanks people. Thanks to Alicia. If she could throw some song titles my way, it would be cool.
Pharrell? yeah - he's good.
don't fear, people. i've got a lot of angles covered
check out this:
http://www.geocities.com/privaj/musicbio.html
(Mozart, Hendrix, Bessie Smith, Billie Holliday, Armstrong, Davis, Parker, Beatles, Dylan)
and i've got Marley, Avril Lavigne (probably not cool enough), some John Lennon, Dylan, and Beatles.
They make requests, they have to make the worksheets.
But today's hot is tomorrow's supermarket and we all need to be forewarned.
thanks again
