ZLATKOMIX (a studio) OPENING

Post by Zlatko Waterman » February 13th, 2005, 9:36 pm

Dear StudioEight members and others:

Thanks for noticing "Zlatkomix" and taking a peek at my work.

Doreen gave me this studio primarily to post my weekly comic strip/ graphic novel, "Umbrella Black: Fetish Psychiatrist" and my other, already flourishing strip, "The Literary Life" ( currently featured on ZYGOTE)

The editor at ZYGOTE has kindly archived all the past episodes of my continuing strip, so you can read what you've missed of the story so far.

I also plan to use this studio to post other stories in illustrated form: comix ( the spelling I prefer), including the single panel, the complete short story, and the children's "picturebook" form.

I have drawn comic strips and books since I was a child and published many of the results. Comics were the first art form in which I worked.

Some of the things you will be able to read here are intended to make you laugh or smile, others might trouble, or even confuse you. For me, comic strips, books, graphic novels, single panel cartoons and picture books all serve the same purpose: putting text and pictures together to strengthen both with their compound effect.

I'm going to launch "Umbrella Black: Fetish Psychiatrist" today.

The strip emerges from my interest in ( and my affection for all the bosh in ) Psychology and Philosophy, the Human Potential Movement of the 1970s-90s and the New Age flurry in all its manic forms; also the strip will mix together ( hence "co-mix") the science fiction and horror genres, H.P. Lovecraft, M. R. James and other immortals of the ghost story , and just about anything else that interests me.

Brel's ardor and earnestness is made fun of at times. But because I have lived close to her for several years now, my affection won't allow me outright, prolonged laughter.

But don't feel similarly constrained yourself.

The strip strays into the subjects of human sexuality and other potentially exalted and absurd human activities and frailties. Since my own tastes in comix run toward the serial adventure strip, be prepared for a weekly episode followed by another and another, etc.. The words "To be continued" will signal that there's more coming.

I also plan to post a pictorial documentary showing how I create comix and other art; I'll also post features ( including illustrated essays) on other comix artists who have influenced me or contributed to the genre, if there is such a single thing.

For me, comix are unlimited.

Features will also include discussions of European comix and links to some of the best ones.

I should probably also announce that, to me, the distinction between "fine" art and comic art, like the distinction between "fine" and "commercial" art, doesn't amount to much.

Like Louis Armstrong said about music: there are only two kinds of jazz, good and bad.

I hope you enjoy these comix. Your comments, the same as on Lightning Rod's weekly "The Poet's Eye", are always welcome.

"THE SHOE FITS" ( a darkly comic male chauvinist m

Post by Zlatko Waterman » February 14th, 2005, 1:46 pm

"THE SHOE FITS", originally appeared on "Zygote in my Coffee" to tumultuous acclaim ( I think at least half-a-dozen people read it)!

I sometimes fear online literary magazines are like Little League Baseball. The parents are in the bleachers cheering their hearts out. But the rest of the hundreds of people in the park are just enjoying the nice day.

The story is now posted in "ZLATKOMIX" and available for viewing in the studio Doreen made for me. This is the first of five parts.

I hope you enjoy this little excursion into the "revenge of the nerd" genre . . .
