Rainbow of Tears

Post by happytrails » November 9th, 2010, 9:23 pm

This started out to be a poem, but as I was writing it,
I began to hear a tune and background singers and a full orchestra.
I don't write music. I couldn't carry a tune if I had a bag to put it in,
but here comes this song in my head.
And that is where it will stay, because I can't
put the music together outside my head.
Ah well, here is what I came up with.

RAINBOW OF TEARS

(chorus)

[Do I remember
[the time you went away
[and left me that December
[on a gray and gloomy day?
[Do I?
[Do I---------------------?
[Know the rainbow of tears?

Oh, how I wish
that you had never gone.
Oh, how I wish,
your love was true and strong.
I wish you hadn't left me
alone with all my fears.
Brokenhearted; lonely,
in the rainbow of tears.
Do I?
Do I-------------------?
Know the rainbow of tears?

[chorus]

My life is almost over
and still I can't forget,
running in the clover;
it was raining; we were wet.
You said you'd always love me
and you'd always be right here.
Then you went away and left me
in the rainbow of tears
Do I?
Do I-----------------?
Know the rainbow of tears?

[chorus]

And now I'm browsing through
a life of wasted days.
A life of loving you
and drifting in a haze.
I've recorded all the memories
in a book that I keep near.
And I take it out out and read it
in the rainbow of tears.
Do I?
Do I-----------------?
Know the rainbow of tears.

[chorus]

{saxophone solo in here, playing far away, plaintive and lonely.}

[chorus]

Now as I'm looking back,
across the lonely years;
I can still see you.
Yes, I can see you.
I see you
through
a rainbow of tears.

[chorus]

Do I?
--------------------------[know]
Do I?
--------------------------[know]
Do I?
--------------------------[know the]
rainbow
-------------------------- [rainbow]
rainbow
--------------------------[of tears?]

Know the rainbow of tears?

Rainbow of tears, tears, tears, tears.......................................fades away.

more saxophone solo; farther away and fading into the distance.

Sometimes I try to imagine a color outside the spectrum of visible light...or a sound outside our vocal capacity...and here you've sung a song that's beautifully composed outside the notation of known music. This is beautiful and artistic and melodic and strong. Thanks for singing for us today!

Reluctant to comment since I know zilch about writing music or words to go with music. Listening to music, I find some where words and notes never
got married and others that would celebrate a century of married life.

But I do try to write poetry, and, since lyrics are poetry, I suggest for "sense" that you consider "rainbow in tears, or in my tears" and instead of Do I know, try Have I seen...

This is not criticism, since I'm out of my swimming pool here. Just suggestions. jim

Joel, thanks for the comment. You are kind. Too bad I can't write music. Can you?

Jim, Hi. I could consider changing Do I know to Have I seen and live with that, but in my heart, where this song was written, the rainbow is not something that I am seeing through tears. It is an actual rainbow made up of all the tears I have cried, instead of raindrops. Thanks for the suggestions.
