What made you so surprised?
And so what made you so surprised?
The whys? The wheres? The hellos?
The goodbyes? The size of the moon
when it was full in the sky? What, pray tell,
put you in a spell and made you so surprised?
She's no silly young girl, you realized.
And yet you went back and forth again.
Was it something she spoke? The shape of her chin?
Conversations which seemed to never quite end?
Did you think she appeared to be some kind of lie?
Why were you so surprised?
Was it the way she brushed her hair or a guise
of her air being too aloof?
Was it the way the snow fell comfortably sound,
quite easily on the roof?
Was it the easiness when you settled in?
And where and how did you begin
to discover the mysteries in her eyes?
What made you so surprised?
What did you expect?
Some game of chess while your king is in check?
The pawns moving sideways one-space-by-one
to the top of the board until you have won?
Was it daylight which snuck in between the blinds
and tricks of fate you never realized
could happen at all, that you never thought of?
Did you really quite possibly think it was love
or some other feeling you couldn't pinpoint?
Was a poor representation of heals and annoints
not really exactly as your mind projected?
What exactly had you expected?
I ask many questions in too many ways
but these are just simply some words in play
and I know this may sound so extremely absurd
but when you notice a bird when she's lost in her flight
do you wonder where she will land, or might?
Perhaps it was the candlelight.
I don't pretend to be that wise. I just wonder in advance.
Before the dance, before you took the chance,
please tell me, dear sir, when you feel so obliged.
What made you so surprised?

Me too, judih.
Hey, I hope you've been having a wonderful Hanukkah ... I can never keep track of the dates. But I've been thinking you!
Thanks for reading my poem!
I love ya, sistah!

Doreen...I am not surprised at all! How beautifully your verses fall! A read of wonder on Christmas Eve that buttresses the thought "believe." Thanks and peace!

Re: What made you so surprised?
So beautiful, her words, she sings in the key
Of futures may come, of futures for me.
But looking in a dorway's eyes
Will never have me surprised.
The "whys", they astound, though they haven't revealed.
The "hows", they abound, in how despair has been killed.
"Where's" unimportant when you tell me hello,
Just do not goodbye, please, no no no.
The moon, at its peak, could never compare
To the spell of your love all through my air.
So beautiful, her face, she paints reality pretty
Dancing through space, she makes the gods giddy.
But looking in a dorway's eyes
Will never have me surprised.
She is young to me, in heart and soul,
A youth which gives without taking a toll.
Back and forth, like waves to a cliff
Closer, closer, and closer still to bliss.
Everything she says sends me up the line
Her chin, her grin, her dreams and her mind.
Conversations which never last long enough
But I'd never think her to be just a bluff.
So beautiful, her kindness, she heals up the world -
Arting the art of making artists' arts twirl.
But looking in a dorway's eyes
Will never have me surprised.
Her hair brushes my heart sweetly awake
Every strand a beautiful new snowflake.
The tenderness and love is never "at ease!"
Always there, gentle but potent - no mysteries!
So beautiful, her dreams, she dances her poem -
A first aid kit of grace that's never been known.
But looking in a dorway's eyes
Will never have me surprised.
I never expect a her versus I,
Not ever in life, nor whenever we die.
Nothing about this is just a mere pawn,
When we're but an orchestra of dancing up the dawn.
I cannot win something that cannot be lost,
My love is not something that can ever be tossed.
Daylight makes clear many things unseen,
But the unknown is no trick, its purity clean.
Love is a thing that one may wish and just hope,
But this beating in my chest is not one of a dope.
She heals me with her tenderness and key points
There's nothing poor about smoking love joints.
My mind only projects acceptance and love
For this beautiful thing, she is my peace of the doves.
So beautiful, her voice, it resonates me anew,
I never would have known I'd find a love so true.
Yet still, to look in a dorway's eyes,
Never will have had me surprised.
She asks and states in all the right ways,
Honestly, and purely, to my amaze.
It catches me off guard to see such a sight
Of a beautiful bird, singing, with such a sweet delight.
To where she will go, or of where she will land,
Mystifies and excites me oh so grand.
Candles and wisdom, with mysterious ties -
Her dance and her touch may just be my demise.
A chance is a thing involving risk of a loss,
But for her, my heart will never be lost.
I may be a fool in love, without surprise,
Letting it all flow, no fear of some lie.
But oh, she is beautiful, in all of her ways,
A precious soul that I treasure on all of the days.
Yet, somehow, I know, I'll not be surprised
To see infinite eights of love in her eyes.
Of futures may come, of futures for me.
But looking in a dorway's eyes
Will never have me surprised.
The "whys", they astound, though they haven't revealed.
