Deck of Pornographic Playing Cards

I saw Kooser read on UCTV
in place of Creely, who could no longer be.
“Watch where yr gone!” Creely might have said
if not, that night, unfortunately dead.

Kooser’s poem was from when he was a kid,
with a buddy, they found under a bridge
a deck of dirty cards by accident.
From this experience the poet laments,

“We were already dying inside.”
I wonder how long it took them to decide,
how long to figure out “no two cards were alike”?
I guess they didn’t run straight for their bikes.

Through all the Midwestern sensitivity
the image that remains for me
is Kooser’s running mate and the young bard
poring over each and every card.

I like this....it's open to interpretation with enough details to stimulate many possibilities... enjoyed it
