fairytale

Post by Doreen Peri » February 20th, 2005, 1:10 pm

fairytale circa 2000

once upon a time
twice upon a dream
once upon a memory
things aren't what they seem

the deck is empty now
it's funny how when he drained
the life right out of me
he took everyone with him
and the trees are overgrown
i need a chain saw
to cut down all
this debris
it's strangling me

and once upon a time
he was never here
once upon a time
destiny unclear
once upon a dull plastic praise
with the twist of berate
once upon a never of too late

but the funeral is over now
the burial complete
i dig his grave and
bury him in my backyard
and he grows into weeds
to be yanked out
and tossed in the
compost pile

but as i pull and pull
the weeds keep
growing back

and then

when i wasn't looking
when my back was turned

then i see
your eyes
and then i hear
these are no lies
no, these are no lies
then i see and then i hear
then i wander
through my fear

it's almost like never
has captured forever
and twisted it up in a blend
it's almost like fairytales
wrapped in a prism
entice me to some never end

and once upon a time
i want to believe in french kisses
laced with bordeaux
but
weeds are eating up my garden
climbing vines still twist amid
the flowers
the lawn has dandelions
and i need edging
to get the borders right

and once upon a time
someone told me
fairytales can come true
but maybe it's only
a wet dream
phrased
by sun streams
echoed off a
wing
beneath the surface
of the ocean

once upon a time
twice upon a dream
once upon a memory
things aren't what they seem

or maybe it's just
a song on the blush of deny
and maybe i will hasten
my distance and fall from the sky
and maybe it's true
and maybe it's not

i never believed in fairytales
i never believed in fate
i never believed in fantasy
please hold me
don't be late

and without hesitation
i just throw something out
and run with it
and run to it
because the clock ticks
seconds into hours
and you
my sweet
could kill
the weeds
you
my love
are flower seeds

time will tell with everything
as i steal lines from people's lips
it will all come into light
and i can't wait to touch
your fingertips
and kiss your brow
goodnight

i'm a half a block away
and i'm parked by the curb
i'm standing in a shadow
waiting for the sun to
erase the clouds
and this stuff just slides
off my tongue
four days from sun showers
four days of bliss
then back to a now
round a dream of a kiss
four days here
and four days there
i wonder if fairytales
live in a dare

once upon a time
twice upon a dream
once upon a memory
are things what they seem?

but i don't believe in love
i tell myself
do i dare believe
the words and passion
tangled
in this weave?

maybe i'm diving into a
pool with no water
an empty ocean
and as my words sit idle
i speak to you
and hear your words
ring true around my
edges
yet somehow
you are my warm passion
you are my thrill
i dream you now
once more until
you are my ardor
you are my fable
come to me quick
while we are able

once upon a time
twice upon a dream
once upon a memory
are things what they seem?

doreen- Thank you for posting this. I love fairytales and you have done them justice with your charming turn of phrase. See you around the castle!
