I couldn't make it as an anarchist
so I decided to sign up for the Antichrist
I owned the job description, dashing, rude
seething, indolent, vain
a general pain
and Pride, yes Pride
my most valiant qualification

My early reading convinced me
that I was nothing special
a late bloomer
falling behind half the time
catching up for the rest
but I was blessed with an essence
a secret smell
noted only by dogs and babes
it made one cry and the other bark
with the stark realization
of how little we can know

Because it's just a show
mercifully short from curtain
to curtain call; with hours
minutes lose their glow
and seconds hardly remember
the years we spend to reach them

Science couldn't tell me for sure
how long a moment lasts
the dependent variable being
into whose eyes we stare
so I told them I only wanted
to work part-time as Antichrist

I'm sure that's what cost me the job
