"It is what it is"
The most worthless statement ever uttered? I think so. Is there worse?
There is no empty space
Re: "It is what it is"
here "es lo que es" is not so common, but "es lo que hay" sí. I guess they have similar meaning, when you say that you are somehow also saying: "don´t bother me with anything else, got it?"... luckily, most of the time language is more profuse than that...

I haven't checked in with studioeight in months. I'm pleased with what I see. Here's a link to my FB profile. Scroll down and check out what I posted yesterday at 1:32 pm PDT. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=861315444

Words have the value that the listener imparts to them.sonofthesun wrote:The most worthless statement ever uttered? I think so. Is there worse?
When in the midst of total understanding: "It is" can express the entire universe
and "It is what it is" offers existence with its own resonant meaning.
Words can either symbolize meaning or not, depending on the time and circumstance.
If someone says them to you with an air of smug knowingness, then the words become passwords to a secret club - and an object of distrust.
But it's not the fault of the words - its the product of the one who uses them, the one who hears them and the chemistry that's created between the speaker and the listener.
That's just my experience

Re: "It is what it is"
what is "it"? if you dont know what "it" is, how can you state what "it" is? it doesnt make sense. if you start off ignorant how can you define something with a generality? what is it to begin with? what i speak of is trying to define something with something that doesnt elucidate. a worthless endeavor. "it is what it is", well.....what is it? .

Re: "It is what it is"
what is 'it'?
good question
the answer could be infinitely changing, depending on the circumstance

Re: "It is what it is"
My personal favoirte for a meaningless phrase is
"It is what it is"
A phrase that seems to simply state the obvious but actually means "it will be what it is," as in "it ain't gonna change, so deal with it or don't."
"Freedom is not free."
I suppos that is the justification for our never ending wars.
Re: "It is what it is"
agree. it's pretty worthless. although its meaning, which i basically see as, "be realistic about the nature of the thing you're dealing with," is perhaps not a totally worthless nugget. but you're right... way overdone by now.
another one i'm quite tired of... "that being said"...
