somebody said they saw me
swinging my pain by the nose
slaying blue dragons
from a soapbox bar stool
delivering tequila sermons
on the booby traps of romance
to every Dick, Harry or Jane
polite enough to listen, getting
smarter with every swallow

but they missed the wetness
behind my Foster Grants, nor could
they see the scars beneath my plaid shirt,
under the skin

somebody said they saw me
wearing my life
like a barbed wire necklace
ripping up Creedence Clearwater songs
trying to get a little six string justice
at the open microphone on Tuesday night,
my voice as sweet as a spoonful
of orange blossom honey

but their smoke-filled ears deceived them
their eyes couldn't see medicated vocal chords
crying in arcane agony for deliverance

some body said they saw me
offering my lap to barflies
telling dirty jokes til closing time
bells clanging like frantic tug boats
in a crowded harbor
for the eternal bar tab that made it easy
for strangers to be my best friend

but they couldn't feel the hollow ring
that echoes in a head from funny words
that resonate outward from the bowels
of a charlatan comedian's empty chest

yeah sure, somebody saw something
sure sure, somebody knew something
somebody heard something, yeah sure
somebody saw something, saw some thing
yea yea, there is always a somebody
believing their senses
