i knew
when i saw the bust
in portland
that man looked so sick
i picked him up hitchiking
a ways back
when the foster kids were still in my car
it was his face that let me see
that being with him
meant something was wrong with me
i knew that
he was set up
by my x and his get up
sad but true
nothing to misconstrue

those feathers in the freezer
his messed up face
let me know
i was right
felons make a different kind of deal
when they have nothing
they will find a way
to get what they want
even if they have to haunt
whatever past they had left
which is not
more or less
what they deserve
trying to save
men like that
is an old habit
