sundown at cabezon

Post by mnaz » November 9th, 2011, 10:31 pm

cabezon rises from frost gold
sunbeam freeze, stark and stunning
the vertical peak, exalted and grim
on the edge of black volcano ghosts
charcoal apparitions on starved sage
skeletal scrub and brittle ice fossils
snow ribbons to carve dark forms
set pale mesas adrift

mesa chivato rises south
in vast flows of sullen basalt
the congealed blood of a slain giant
in language of navajo myth

horizon makes no move
immovable ground, gave its word
then a shadow stretches, a finger of pink
it gives way, suffers the earth rotation

moon is a pale excuse
never the same fickle face nor place
she sneaks up behind sienna sunfire
raises adobe ruins from sage tombs
a pure, dry cold running in and out
let it take on remorseless fire
