the goddess & the fiery serpent

Post by Doreen Peri » November 12th, 2011, 4:16 am

.
I met a fiery serpent one day.
He said, "I am here to say that
you, my dear, are a Goddess."
And in one ear, I heard his voice,
his choice to hiss and bless
me with a kiss of praise,
enough to raise his head
up to the point of venturing in.

"But no," I said, "I do not know
you well enough, and tough
as it may be to turn you down,
I don't believe your words.
I will accept your crown
for only temporary honor."

"You do not understand,"
the fiery serpent pled.
"It isn't just desire to take
you to my den, my bed,
to worship you and do the deed.
Oh no, but I will not ever plead
with you to comprehend!
I only want to spend
some time with you."

And then the serpent blew
some venom from his tongue,
my vision misted over – I'd become
no longer young and saw quite
clearly through the view into his
coiled intentions.

"What IS that thing?," I asked.
Is that your own invention?
And do you plan to fake
your forked-spun words
and leave me in an
animated, cruel suspension?
I know your game!
you're just the same as
others who have praised me
with the Goddess name
and left me begging for
redemption."

"No no!" the fiery serpent spewed,
"It's not just you I want to
take to bed!" he said,
"Do you have any sisters?
All women are dear Goddesses to me!
I see you so attired and my desire,
please believe, is to relieve you
from your binding garb
to set you free!"

"What? ME?," I asked. "No heart, no whole
endearment to my very soul?"

He winked at me, that feiry serpent,
coiled and ready for the pounce,
so soon I slipped away beyond the hole
below his habitat
without an ounce
of guilt or even crave or lucid dream…

Except the steam of eyes glassed over
from a hyptnotist, it seemed,
and I, who thought the praise a lie,
(so very much naiive but wise, now saved)
will take him with the others
quietly to my grave.

Doreen, this is fantastic. I love how you use myth to create a universal story of the male con artist. Your wit shine through this.

just what i needed- happy turkey day
reason is over rated, as is logic and common sense-i much prefer the passions of a crazy old woman, cats and dogs and jungle foliage- tropic rain-and a defined sense of who brings the stars up at night and the sun up in the morning---
