this is a damn good night for writin'
I'm awake and those angry voices
out in the street got me wired a little

been at it like six hours straight
'cause not one of dem gotta get up
early for work tomorrow 'cause none of dem

got jobs, hell nobody 'round here workin'
much anymore, but I got me a little gig
cleanin' up the post office three times a week

it ain't much, and dig this, they call me the custodian
ain't that a hoot, funny name for janitor I guess
or cleanin'-up-man.....and everyone is real nice to me

and with my other two jobs, ...course they ain't legal
or nothin', ha ha, but I'm doin' okay, pretty good i'd say
likes to write me a poem or two some nights, drink

a little of this here vodka with the lemon already
in the bottle, yessir, my life is A-1, like the steak sauce
and I'm tough alright... cheap-steak tough, I'm leather

tough, that's right, but I love my poetry books too ya know
guess I'm what they call complicated, I like my boxin' on tv
and I likes to say me a few prayers some nights too
