Sunday Stream (22) ~ Plagiarism

Post by mtmynd » March 6th, 2005, 12:45 pm

PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism – from the Latin plagiārius, kidnapper, plagiarist, from plagium, kidnapping, from plaga, net.]

Plagiary is a $2.00 word to describe the ‘kidnapping’ of another’s idea, usually artistic or scientific. I don’t think one could steal someone’s religious belief or even their philosophy... those are incumbent upon attitudes more than anything concrete...

Plagiary is something a lot of folks are ignorant of doing. It doesn’t make any sense to them if they see or hear something that where the idea came from is somehow a ‘special place’ that reflects the soul of the person who is sharing their expression or slant on the world with others. The ignorant feel that if the art is out in the open they are free to take it, although they themselves wouldn’t dream of stealing another’s material possession.

Plagiary is usually done by those that feel “I can do that!” without asking themselves “Why do I want to do that?” The ignorant are, at best, innocent in their actions and thieves at worst. Most plagiarists fall somewhere in between those extremes.

Influenced by something, be it a piece of art, a handmade craft item or a song or dance, even a sculpture, the plagiarist might feel that they have the ability to duplicate that very thing they are influenced by, not realizing that the person doing the creation has spent a great deal of time in making the object come into existence, either through creative time or the amount of time developing the creative ability that defines themselves thru the object of art.

Where does influence and plagiary cross? Should our influences allow us freedom to duplicate that very thing(s) that have so influenced us? The answer lies in knowing yourself... simple to suggest or imply, but those ignorant of themselves find knowing themselves to be a mystery - “What is there to know?” they may ask themselves.

Any successful artist, regardless of the medium, is successful not because they have copied another but because they know themselves... maybe not to the soul but they recognize the voice of the soul within that allows them to create in their own image. Think back historically to those artists that have influenced you. They could be painters, sculptors, dancers, musicians, writers or poets... it does not matter where the influence comes from but only that you have been influenced. Those artists are the ones that have developed their own stamp, their own signature, their own way of expressing themselves and that is by knowing their own path, which has been carved out by the influences that have moved them.

We may not appreciate all artistic expression, but we must acknowledge that all successful artists are expressing their own soul, so to speak, through the channeling of their own Self. And as developing artists we may find ourselves, at best, imitating those that we admire and, even worse, mimicking those that we feel “I can do that!” But we must continue to find our Self, using our influences as tools to further define our true Self. We must continue doing, creating, expressing to find and reflect that which is our Self, no matter what the medium it is that we choose to use, for each and everyone of us is unique and will not realize our uniqueness if we settle for Xeroxing our influences and call it our Self. Each of us, no matter our lot in life, have an ultimate responsibility to be our Self, attained thru the tools that we have to reflect that Self, such as a sculptor will chip away at the stone that holds the statue within.

Never settle for plagiarism, a cheap imitation of others, to define your Self no matter the price. The path of discovery is the journey in knowing who you really are, and you are the most priceless Self of all. There is no other like you. Find it - express it!

tis a great painting cecil......I'd like to see a full shot of it.......influenced, we live in it, wade in it, can't help but be bitten by it....Picasso said he took the best from the masters and threw the rest away....until he finally got to the point that he threw all that knowledge away and worked at painting with the innocence and freedom of a child. I remember around 10 years ago I was a featured poet at reading that had an open mike at the end, this guy got up and read the Revolution Will Not Be Televised and walked off without acknowledging the author, Gil Scott Heron, and it pissed me off at the time and I made this known. Now the guy is a regular at the poetry events and a pretty good one at that, and now he reads his own stuff. There's always someone out there who knows the real deal.....it's kinda a three stage deal, influenced by, copying and not giving credit to the creator, and all out forgery. My 1st teacher the welded metal sculptor John Duffy was often copied and when he found out he would literally go to the outdoor show where they were displaying and bust their work up. There's a guy in Virginia that still makes welded stuff that's similar to Duffy
but he had to change his work after losing a court battle with Duffy in the 70's, now me I never could do exactly like him, even though I was granted permission and the stuff sold, my folks stuck to the Duffy way and made a living, me I always followed my own path, influenced mind ya by David Smith, Gauguin, Max Ernst, and of Course papa Calder, in fact everytime I show I'm asked about my daddy and I do pay homage to my main man, happened at the opening today, even though the work looks nothing like his.Image.........Carole Jean...wire & glass bead by CJ

Artguy - I appreciate the words on the piece... it's one of those paintings that ultimately had to be called "untitled", a title that Soo abhors, but I believe I finally have reached that point where I have no other choice but to call it that. I'm not even convinced that it is finished at this point... there is an area that is not in the photo that leaves me uneasy. If I hear what needs to be in that area perhaps the piece will no longer be "untitled."

Hes' - it's wonder full that you connect to what I stream on about. May we one day meet in person and connect... face-to-face. Thank you for stopping in. I do appreciate your replies.

Wired - I really liked your words here! I know you relate to the stream and I appreciate the story. The story about John Duffy made me smile... he apparently KNEW and it didn't set well with him, eh? We all react according to where we are on the journey. Thanks for sharing that great piece of yours! Have you ever kept count of your pieces? (I haven't, myself... but ....) Thanks for the reply... I do appreciate you (and others) taking the time..!

Ya know I've got shots of most everything I've done. I just got a scanner and will be organizing my archives when possible, yet I'm so caught up in the moving forward that it's hard to go back, there's about 120+ wired one's out there in the world.

Gonna go into studio to record with Tommy Di Venti and Jaime Wilson, Mayor O'Malleys drummer, soon with my electronic Riyaz tabla and electronic Raagini tambura on Tommy's new CD. These 2 sound machines are like having a band at my disposal, they enable me to play my wood flutes, harmonicas, and drums with exquisite back up, I am also working on my skills with 2 bamboo xylophones and a Hohner concertina, I'm about to buy a Moog Theremin and and add it's haunting sound to my electronic ensemble. I'm getting ready for a benefit show here in April and hopefully a CD of my own, poetry and the music

plagiarism is a piss-off alright
but no one does originals better than you
or her
or him
or me
or us

so let's keep our mind on authenticity.
and love the painting.
wish i could get into that brush and feel what it's like to land on a canvas in that way.

(quasi-vicarious-plagiarism?)

Stanley Miller and Harold Urey

http://albalagh.net/kids/science/evolution.shtml

http://www.accessexcellence.org/WN/NM/miller.html

From Malcolm Little to Malcolm X to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabbaz

Plagarism, remends of a bunch of old guitar pickers sitting around and stealing each other's songs, "ancient dead trees" "tented pants" I stopped putting quotes about those because I would go off on rambles in () remarks about my memory of who wrote those words. If I was doing this to make a living, to provide living for my family I would be a more careful writer. The only time I can be authentic is when I can negate myself, leave myself out of the equation. Mediation and Meditation, still chewing on those seeds, word kook that I am. I was sitting here listening to a lawn motor and the radiation when I thought of you and the sunday streams or as they seem to me my sunday dams on the stream. Kind of like a spirit game, just let the words go. This week I wish I had started last weeks stream first but it left me wordless on my first read, which I think was a bout forty five seconds. Plagarism I ain't got a clue this week, but last week I am going to read a lot more slowly. so on time so useful, keep up the good work compadre

don't mean nothing
just a ramble about dead rats with maggots
drive on, drive on
"war is a failure of the imagination"

wired - you sound as if you are happily busy creating... sculpts, sounds, words... and a cd! keep me on the mailing list, amigo! (the theramin-deal sounds great... it reminded me of 'Lothar and the Hand People" from the 70's (?), outta Denver if I remember)

SooZ - fancy seeing you around these parts! Your leavin's sound right... but that doesn't surprise me! The painting sounds good "untitiled" doesn't it? I know how you like that 'title"...

judih - there is quite a bouquet of originality around dis place, isn't there? the mixes of fragrance iis hypnotic and seductive. Thx for the words on the painting... after reading all the nice comments regarding it I may have to finish the left side.. Hah!

Thx, truck, and good see you back... I shall puruse the provided links at will.
