when I was 17

Post by revolutionrabbit » February 24th, 2012, 5:15 am

jelly beans for brains
I was a product of the good book
I was born in West Bend Wis.
and my pop went west as a young man
as a kid in California I saw the west
become one huge freeway and filling station
I played marbles in the street and cowboys
and Indians, I had the best cap guns ever
when a teenager I became my head was full
of twilight zones and Disneyland
I needed a drug to open my eyes
but not those ones they gave to kids that
could not sit still
I was a real dreamer
that became a little rebel at six
at sixteen, I read about LSD in Life magazine
I was ready to leave the twilight zone and Mickey
Mouse land behind, I was ready for the outer limits
for the outta sight, outta mind, I wanted to be the
living end, man!, I was ready to be a real cool cat
not only did LSD open my eyes, it spilled my
psychic jelly beans, it roto-rootered my whole
perspective, turned me inside out, and cleared
out the catholic church cobwebs, the puke pew
drunkards mass aroma, I woke from the kooky
lend-me-your-comb coma, I hung out with bongo
beaters, and acid queens, all I wore was blue jeans
and long sleeve t-shirts were hep, because
they covered the needle marks even if there weren't any
I only shot LSD once, I was listening to Lenny Bruce
and the hippie kid that did the fix was as angry
as I was, it did not matter that that it did not work
it was the thought that counted, I began reading poetry
I wanted to write stuff that was like a real great acid trip
I was already seventeen, and I knew that people were
chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo out there somewhere
I wanted to know the great mystery of the universe
because it wasn't jelly beans and hula-hoops
my Nam, was not Vietnam, if you dig my drift, I lived
in thrift stores, and Love-ins, and spaced out all day
on Like A Rolling Stone just before I smoked my first joint
it don't get any more cosmic then that, well maybe, but
it was the dawning of the age of Aquarius, and I had a lot
of cosmic spacing out to do, before the whole shit house
went up, like another poet once said, and one other thing
I fell in love with more girls when I was seventeen, eighteen
then the rest of the far out years altogether...when the mooooooon

lovely-
reason is over rated, as is logic and common sense-i much prefer the passions of a crazy old woman, cats and dogs and jungle foliage- tropic rain-and a defined sense of who brings the stars up at night and the sun up in the morning---
