jungles receded, savannas grew
funky primates roamed the plains
in search of the grassy truth

to the grasslands! forage and cope

berries 'n mushrooms for diet, not dope

and wonders unfolded, new evolution
walls blurred between the senses
sharper vision and new-found speech
spoken sounds to convey the scene

but the climate changed, alas, alack
and no more mushrooms for dinner
the apes fell back into brutal packs
can’t tell the saints from sinners

twelve thousand years in the valley!
down their bloodthirsty blind alley
toward their timewave zero singularity
the asymptote of infinite complexity

trumpets will blare, the line will spike
as they pass through the needle's eye
and slip back into the garden within
or possibly ride the whirlwind

thanks steve. this one actually takes on two of terence mckenna's theories-- the shroomin' funky apes, and timewave zero- a.k.a. the end of history. the weird thing about the latter is that he supposedly calculated 2012 as "the end," using a computer program he designed to model the ebb and flow of "novelty"--- some sort of "cosmic complexity." and he supposedly arrived at this conclusion even though he knew nothing of the mayan calendar beforehand .... weird ....

anyway, ya gotta love a guy who theorizes that 15,000 years or so of violent human history is but an unfortunate, needless "detour" of sorts. a self-fulfilling wasteland about to run its course . . .
