There once was a generation that stood up for what they believed.
It doesn’t matter which, or what country or beliefs,
They had come under attack, by a common enemy,
And they knew what had to be done.
It was a generation of different backgrounds
Of different values;
But they shared one common view.
Their way of life was under attack and needed to be preserved.
No matter what the cost.
And they paid.
Not only those who actually saw combat (though they paid most of all)
Even the little man back home.
By giving up his luxuries.
By being willing to save and build and find every little
Scrap
Of material which was needed.
They all fought, and though the odds were against them
They persevered.
But what has happened?
Today there are gross violations of nearly every right
That they had fought
And bleed
And died
For.
And there is complacency.
What has happened to the fire which used to burn so brightly
That the very hordes of evil where turned back?
We have become slaves to our situation.
Bought and paid for before our very birth.
It’s always been the weak against the strong.
The unwilling against the fanatical.
The unprepared against the machine.
But WE,
The small,
The unsure,
The ones with EVERYTHING to lose.
We are the powerful.
When our will is combined,
There is NOTHING to stop us.
So what is stopping you?
the world at war
the world at war

Re: the world at war
Maybe that is how it was in the good old daysNot only those who actually saw combat (though they paid most of all)

but these days women and children pay most of all

WW1 = 10% civilian casualties of the war.
WW2 = 20% civilian casualties of the war.
Vietnam War = 50% civilian casualties of the war.
Iraq = 90% civilian casualties of the war.

Re: the world at war:So what is stopping you?
please pardon my sarcasm
some days it's all I got
I guess the only thing stopping me is my will to live.
i used to listen to that song during the 2004 presidential campaign, I am still listen to it now and then, but am not the true believer that I used to be in the democratic party anymore. But I am still sentimental, I still vote every chance I get. But I always seem to wind up voting for the next commander in chief. Another great war leader.
thanks for writing
any suggestions on what I should do about it?
I been thinking about voting for a socialist next time. A woman socialist.
thank you for the fuel for thought

Re: the world at war
I think this came across a little more... patriotic; then I intended. I also think, and that’s the idea I was trying to capture, that we have strayed far from the roots of good any political party may have once represented. May have to call this one a failure eh? My fear is the loss of rights that have been hard fought and died for whether it be by politicians, labor unions, the military or just the average man standing up to a system he found tyrannical. I often wonder what it will take to get people INVOLVED once again and I fear there may not be much worth saving once we find out. As far as ideas what to do about it? Nothing that wouldn’t take a large percentage of population to make successful; but in a time that our country seems headed ever closer to the brink of fascism whilst they try to convince us that socialism is the problem, as the good doctor always said, “I have the fear…” Quite the rant I suppose for Independence Day. Maybe one day I will be able to believe in it….
