Though it's true that poet laureate
earns a goodly salary
performs for heads of state
(2 hundred dollars a plate)
wears the right look
talks the jargon
walks the beaten path
though all that's true
it's sure as hell plain
that drivel therapy
drooling in comic balloons
will get ya there just the same
without slick upbeat shine
without the mess and limo bother
As words erase their sting
and relish relinquished offense
no government honour sings quite as bland
as the stamp of approval
a pat on the shoulder
the benediction of 'go ahead'
say what's on your vast applauded mind
your Name will go down in history
the right words at the right time
when people go home smiling
(they heard a genuine poet!)
and continue in their sleepdoggy dog grog
ain't it the truth that the slob in this room
said something better a moment ago
as mind walks image through the steps
and lands in an uncelebrated corner
of this universal couch.
relaxed and ready for more.

note: it's kind of tacky to double post - but since doreen's incredulity about the new poet laureate got me thinking - i've posted this on a few boards....
Drooling in Comic Balloons - O, Poet Laureate!
Hey Jude!
I've been meaning to tell you how much I've enjoyed this piece, I've read it several times...just to delight myself.....
"ain't it the truth that the slob in this room said something better a moment ago......."
it is indeed the truth.
Although I wouldn't call you a slob....

Judih, this is a great poem. I think you ought to post more of these. You have more to say than just three lines.
