In house at the edge of a cliff, overlooking Morro Bay, in the summer of 1976, the first time I heard him. Can't remember much of the lyrics, but the roar of the surf in the background is still in my ears.

A rough draft of the lyrics for the newest song I've inflicted on the band. Myoung's been (understandably) asking for lyrics, so here is what I've got.
chorus 1:
I'm a-walkin' down this road,
Where it goes, nobody knows. (x2)
verse 2:
One foot and then the other,
the footsteps one by one.
Five thousand miles to go
Before my walkin's done.
chorus:
I'm a-walkin' down this road,
Where it goes, nobody knows. (x2)
I'm a-goin' to the East,
Always famine, never feast. (x2)
bridge:
cigarettes and tin cans in the ditch beside the road
old men fishing in the shade
choking on exhaust from trucks that rumble by
turning to the east... following my feet—
sax solo
bridge:

old men fishing in the shade
choking on exhaust from trucks that rumble by
turning to the east... following my feet—
final chorus:
Sit beneath the bodhi tree,
chewin' on these leaves of tea. (x2)
Never sleep and always pray,
Swear we'll all break out one day. (x2)
I'm a-walkin' down this road,
Where it goes, nobody knows. (x2)
And for anyone silly enough to be curious, I'm posting a second version, with all the cues and instructions I'm including for the band, in the extended entry.

final chorus (Thai & Seong Hwan sing the verse as a counterpoint, possibly with lyrics from verse 2 or maybe just humming):
Sit beneath the bodhi tree,
chewin' on these leaves of tea. (x2)
Never sleep and always pray,
Swear we'll all break out one day. (x2)
I'm a-walkin' down this road,

Last time we ran through the song, there was even one more chorus, but I'm not sure whether it'll turn up in the final semi-concrete version, and anyway, I'm not even sure where it was. I'll do up lyrics eventually for it if we need them. Until then we can use the first four lines of the final chorus there, if we need them.
