i am more focused,
more determined to listen, really hear

the essential messages should never get the cold shoulder

losing a friend hones the neurons
to razor sharp edges
that slice you

no matter which way you turn

your oozing blood forces you to stare at the red
to measure and record all actions,
to reevaluate time and energy

to allocate your cells in the proper proportions

I walk the woods by the lake, static daylight
is enough for cerebral photography
the camera just behind my eyeballs

snaps wildly and often

I organize the pictures into brand new albums
each of them titled with the poetry of metamorphosis
one by one i watch them accept their new wings

fly off with no concern for wind sheer

their flight tucks a smile inside my heart's secret pocket
they are liberated butterflies of peace
they are the multi-colored monarchs of healing

they are a symphony of molecules

they are the universal oxygen,
