i hear you on the ibuprofen
use those for my back when it's barking
i was surprised to find that riding a bike
didn't bother my back at all
& double surprised to discover that it
actually kept it from barking in other areas of my life
didn't have to take pain pills hardly ever during riding season
take more now that I don't get to ride daily

i hear ya about the rambles
it's a shambles in the brambles
an honest candle or two
in the dark would be best
all the way around
what I miss or crave I guess
is reach -
I don't care if a man or woman
goes right off the road
and crashes into the trees
as long as they do it because
they are reaching for expression
and are willing to wreck and/or empty themselves completely to get it
all in ya know?
if I got any standard
that's the one I hold to
I don't know much
but I know meat when I see it
and tow that line
because I come to eat
and I expect a feast

as the titanic went down
icy calm
icebergs all around
sittin still
menacing powerful
rounding the horn
or the straits of magellan
the confusion of waves
wave upon wave
waves that can
break an ocean liner
powerful sea
yes the sailor
is the bravest
along with the
dog fighter
and parachutist
jumpin into the night
bombs bursting the air
landings on beaches
doors opening into
oblivion, brothers falling
then u got the steppes
cold majesty
time standing still
yet the sun moves
no stoppin that
simple fact
just like jam
let it be honest
let it be now
let it be sticky
let it ramble
it should do it
let it be poetic
for it is
it can be read
it can be expressed
aloud, but???

i ain't even had my coffee yet
still cross-eyed from sleep
& ran right into your jam here
holy kibbles & bits - it's lifting me up
mountaintops & sea floors
you went kentucky long rifle time on me
we can't be the last of the jammers
there's more got to be out there
everybody jams every day and
just don't know it
you hear it in conversations all around you
short & long
happening right in front of us
and zoo zoo zooming on by
it's as constant as weather
just as changeable
can't get away from it
nowhere you can go where it ain't
it occupies every point in space & time simultaneously
God never took jam away
he only confused the languages of men
everything jams even the critter kingdoms
get close to a hive of bees
and that buzz ya hear is jam
coyotes wolves they break into jam
howling away and the whales in the sea
even my bike jams when in motion
not just the whir of the wheels
but the whole machine
got a sound all together
only time it's not jamming
is when it's still - leaning up against a wall
when i was in high school
a friend of mine took one of those small portable reel-to-reel recorders
and stood with it at one of the main intersections in town
and recorded the sounds there
for the full 15 minute length of the tape
he played it back for me later
i was awed by it ya know
because my mind hadn't stretched that far yet
but it wasn't what was on the tape
that awed me as much as what he said about it
when i told him it was cool but why i asked him did he do it? -
he said he wanted to write like the sounds at that intersection
as complete as whole as alive as real as that -
he showed me a connection there I didn't know the existence of
a connection in thought -
a connection not only in imagination but in the blood -
it blew me clean away -
taken me years to catch up with it
still catching up with it -
that between a crumbling stone foundation
a child's bicycle laying in the grass
a conversation about the price of gas
a movie about samurai
and an advertisement for candy bars
there is a connection
it's a jam
