Two Spoken Word Pieces Later

Post by Doreen Peri » June 28th, 2015, 10:58 pm

Listen to this, she said.
Sure, I'd love to, his head nodding
and so they did, the bid of the moment
offered like a sacrificial lamb and the
damn things played and the way
the music hung on the edge of yet
again another dawn, the songs went out
into a missed mist and this
was all there was
until he insisted:
"I thought we were going to watch a little TV."

Yeah, I used to watch Law and Order-- pretty good show. Not all TV is garbage of course (only 90% of it). I just reached a point several years ago where I couldn't take any more of the endless barrage of blip-vert, shiny, flashy, A.D.D., loud, insidious hard-sell commercials. Gawd, just unbelievably relentless . . . Enough!

I do a lot more reading now.

Interesting flow of thoughts in this. I kinda get it but wonder about

the songs went out
into a missed mist and this

I like the sound but like a mist the meaning is a little hazy----but I kinda get it. I think we could have a long discussion on the meaning of "mist" in the context of the poem. I see the mist as a desirable thing, something added to the solid world. TV at the end evaporates that mist quickly like turning on a noon sun, or maybe blows it away like a strong puff of wind.

The mist is both a fantasy of feeling, a layer of emotional enchanting music, a dew-filled touch of affection, a layer of transforming hard edges into a soft wonderful cuddle.

There is a cynical note that plays counterpoint in this poem. The poem is not just a snuggle up but also an airing of disappointment.
The Irish Sea Is Always In Turmoil, Even When Calm.

Very interesting reply, Dan... I keep reading it and re-reading it. It was really a funny comment in reply to listening to a couple of my spoken word pieces, the comment about watching TV. Hah! I laughed aloud and thought I'd document a moment. Really it's just word music with a punch line, but I like your interpretation... thank you!
