NOT AT ALL BAD 1964

Post by dadio » September 21st, 2015, 7:05 am

And Milka said
we must get dressed
before my mother
gets back

from shopping
ok
I said
and so we dressed

and she made
the bed up
and looked out
of the window

and it was
a sunny day
and she said
you know it's almost

two years since
I first saw you
when my brothers
brought you home

from work with them
that Saturday
and you shyly
looked at me

and I stared at you
and thought God
he's dishy
and it was ages

before you took me
for the bike ride
that first time
us alone

and Mum said
don't spoil her Benny
you don't have
to take her

if you'd rather not
and you said
you didn't mind
and my brothers

were teasing me
but now we're lovers
and no one knows
and having dressed

we went downstairs
and she made us coffees
and we sat
at the kitchen table

and her mother
came back
from shopping
and said

hello Benny
nice to see you
and hey Milka
help me get

the shopping in
from the car
and so off
they went outside

and I thought
about the sex we
had had
and thought

that was good
not at all bad.

a charming playful romp....the simple straight forward conversation suggests to me that any attempt to complicate the story by using heavy language, will only take away from the power of the poem....I really like the use of conversation, or running commentary in the speaker's mind with dialogue that define's the poem....it's an effective way to demonstrate that anecdotes can create vivid pictures
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading
