I doodle the same old cartoon faces in the margins
as I wait for Inspiration to pay me a visit, will she
ring the doorbell or walk right through the wall
sit in my lap, stroke the throbbing temples of a good novel
I distort their animated expressions the longer I wait....
they begin to match my imagined vacant stare
even without a reflection I can feel the blankness
of my eyes, sometimes a mirror is nothing but overkill
I don't need to study the crevices, try to remember
how they got there, behold the scars that have piled up
like fallen oak leaves yet to be raked into piles for burning
so I avoid the proof like Jehovah Witnesses at the front door
I try to focus on something uplifting, something beyond
the truth everyone sees, there is nothing to rue about here
I accept the decline with the grace of a gentleman, my good
manners can be useful here in a world that favors beauty
I try to be sexy and handsome with my ballpoint pen
'cause I really want to believe you can't judge a book
by its cover, I call a friend up to see if she wants
to go to brunch in the morning, champagne cocktails,
conversation, the comfort of familiarity, the peace
that exists between two veterans of war, when no one
has an agenda, and laughs flow easy and often,
and the quests of romance, have turned most days
to radiant contentment
new year, same place on the medicine wheel
new year, same place on the medicine wheel
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading
you may end up where you are heading

Not a bad place on the weel. The sence of time ,the return to the truth of it slipping away , ah but then out the door and on with the show, how it goes , enjoyed the poems honesty and relevance!
