too hot
by 9 am
too buggy to hike
cooler weather on the way
then back to otter river
and its patchwork of trails
all familiar
but always something new
fresh windfall
a turtle
a heron
(once an eagle!)
something
to feed the soul
of a voyeur of
the natural world

Bartender
give me one of them
Wild Mongolias, no ice
cause I don't want to
water down the buzz
better make that a double chief
cause there's some shit
going on outside my window
and well, I would just like
to take a nap cuz dreamin'
is the bomb-a lomba bing bong
got it all over reality some days
but I ain't afraid to live
in the real world, it'd just
not every minute, I need
a long cold shower sometimes
cocktails on the veranda
conscience packed in ice
the rocking chair humming
like a doo dah man truckin'
'cross my front lawn, the robins
not only rock, they roll
they sing harmony all over
a still soul, so pour me another
one of them Wild Mongolias my man
papa is ready to tap the universe
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

it finally happened
i got rushed by a big dog yesterday afternoon
he was coming fast
he wanted a piece of my ass
i got rammed by that big dog
he hit me and the bike hard
the last thing I remember is goin down
i don't remember hitting the ground
but it must have been hard enough
to knock me clean out
when I woke I was laying
on my back in the dirt
my legs tangled up in the bike
i was totally disoriented
didn't know where i was
or who i was
it was like being in a dream
i was a mile from the house
i don't know how i got home
i don't remember
Nancy got home from work
took me to the VA hospital
they CAT-scanned me
said I had a good concussion
said i had torn something in my shoulder
the right acromio-clavicular joint separation
fucking dog -
he was nowhere to be seen when i came to
nobody was anywhere to be seen
anyways - fucking dog

brand-new dog
first off-leash hike
terra incognita
abandoned dirt road
deep woods
hilly
winding
rough and cobbled
with twice as many legs
he races ahead
don't lose him
keep him in sight
watching him
I lose track of my feet
hit a rock
faceplant
broken rib
bloody knee
bloody dog...

holy shit mingo, hope you are going to be okay
as a letter carrier for half of my working life
I know all too well the dangers that canines
bring to the neighborhoods, and nothing pissed me off
more than an irresponsible dog owner that refused
to keep his ill behaved animal on a leash or in the house
and I especially didn't like some yoyo telling me
He doesn't bite.....I'd stare him right in the eyes
and say, He's got teeth doesn't he ?....dumbass
I've seen careers end from a single attack,
I've fought off every breed known to man, and
the funny papers don't help with all their little cartoons
about that cute little mailman/dog relationship
that's a harmless amusing part of life......I love dogs
I despise many owners....I've cussed them out more
than once, and when backed in a corner
looking at nothing but teeth and gums, I've maced them.
kicked them and punched them repeatedly in the head...
which ain't easy for a dog lover to do...but if you don't
want to be my friend, and you are set on removing a piece of me
well then, it's going down you deranged mongrel...
almost lost my hand to a Rottweiler, but for the quick
thinking of a neighbor that distracted him by turning
the hose in his eyes, giving me a chance to run...
never met a Chow I liked....they are evil.....sorry
but I do have experience....met very sweet Pit Bulls,
sweet Shepherds, lots of wonderful breeds....always look
at the the owner....thank god he didn't maul you while you
were unconscious ....sending healing vibes to tug hill
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

I second that thought, saw, all the way - I don't know for sure since I was out of it but he must have hurt himself when he hit me & the bike - and that was enough for him to pick himself up and get back across the road to home - he was nowhere in sight when I came to -

and Thx, saw, the separated shoulder joint is what's causing me the most discomfort and I look like hell with a bad black eye, scrapes, cuts - so far no after effects from the concussion that the VA doc told me to watch for - been keeping my eye for those - can't ride & won't be able til the shoulder joint mends which is a matter of scarring according to the doc - the scarring actually helps to pull things back together - won't be right ever again but he said I will be able to use it "almost good as new" - don't ya love the use language can be put to ? I tried some figure 8's on the bike in the driveway yesterday afternoon but no, too soon for that - when you were delivering mail did you ever use mace or pepper spray and how effective was it ? - I don't want to have to club an animal either if I can help it ... Thx 8)

I hear that, Wireman - I certainly won't be complacent ever again when it comes to dogs or how fast something can happen with them - in hindsight I tell myself I should have got off the bike
at the first sight & growl of the animal and put the bike between me & him - realistically though there was not time for that - damn the whole thing happened so fast - or else my age has slowed me right down - time was ain't now 8)
