hey mingo....the pepper spray is very effective as long as the wind isn't blowing...if you forget which direction the wind is blowing you can end up spraying yourself.....mace can cause permanent damage to a dog's eyes, so in the Postal Service we had to use the pepper spray they provided....I found that you don't necessarily even have to hit the dog's eyes....it startles them, and even if if it gets on their face they will stop....i've seen dogs rub their face on the macadam or sidewalk to try to get it off

One day I was doing my rounds, and a dog sitter let out a particular ferocious dog which came right at me.....I fought him off with everything I had....sometimes there is no time for spray, so I used my hands and feet. The next day when i came by, a neighbor down the street says to me, " What was that martial arts you used on that dog yesterday ?"

HA HA....i made it up !

The Postal Service uses the brand called " HALT"....it's sold on Amazon......comes with a clip to attach to your belt.....good luck, my friend.....now that I'm retired, I guess I can share this...it also works on people.....I saw a kid getting the shit kicked out of him by three other kids....he was on the ground and they were taking turns kicking him in the head....I yelled at them to knock it off.....they told me to fuck off.....so they all got a good dose of HALT....end of story....the boy got up and ran away.....they 3 were out of commission for some time...I always wondered if they would try to retaliate....find me one day....but nothing came of it....I only did it because I genuinely believed they were going to kill him...it was a tough call....

Ya did the righteous, saw, for sure - ya can't be faulted -
sometimes i think situations like that
exist just to get us involved -
no choice but to do what's called for
and do it pretty-up-and-walking-good

august days -
blackberries...
cicadas...
cardinal flowers
and joe-pye weed...
scott brook
just a vale of damp rocks...
no fight left
in the garter snakes...
even the deer flies
mailing it in...
that patch on howeville road
sun-washed by 7 am -
now at 7:30...
and whither
the ovenbirds?...
slowly
inexorably
does summer make ready
for fall

I was coasting down the hill when the dead bird on the shoulder caught my eye I grabbed for brakes and stopped next to the body - I turned it over with my foot - said to myself, "now what?" released the brakes put foot to pedal and

rolled on down the hill
towards the river
crossing the bridge

it's quietness catches my ear lately - got back on a bike yesterday - a week exactly since being rammed by a dog - a good deal of pain with the riding - thank God i can still feel pain - pain is being alive leaps & bounds over just about anything -
find it hard to hold with all the shit anymore -

it all
goes
rolling by

get a good piss followed by a good bowel movement & something to eat every morning then everything is good - bread is good - coffee is good - bunch of girl's bikes all piled together up in the scrapyard - i will be doing some scavenging & salvage work before the day is done - one of my dead grandfathers is rubbing my hands together just thinking 'bout it -

canned ravioli for lunch
piece of bread
milk

... then falling for a nap in the heat while watching some guys going 'round Latvia digging up WW2 stuff - the many faces of poetry -

hell yeah mingo
the terminator can't be stopped
the bike must be tamed
like a bad mannered mongrel
the bike parts must be
assembled, the ride must go on
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

Saturday morning and
where are all you cats ?
not a peep anywhere
don't blame ya'll
this heat is heavy
& humidity is hand-in-hand with it
this wheelman is about to roll
18 miles to get where I'm goin'
18 miles to get back
but that's not the whole story -
the 18 miles to get there I'll be working my way down
the southern slopes of the Tug
the 18 miles to get back here will be up those same slopes
I expect to feel like I accomplished something
by the time I get back here
it's about time I challenged myself
with unmitigated distance
and quit fucking around 8)

me and the Ghost about to be
layin it down on the Hill -
