maybe

Post by sasha » December 19th, 2016, 1:42 pm

the morning sun
is still two fists
below the treeline
deep cold
my breath floats before me
wraithlike
coating my mustache
with rime
as I pause
to unhook his leash
so he can run
then I press on
cleats crunching into the ice
uphill now
breathing harder
but still breathing
and I think of him
brother-in-law
comatose
in the cardiac ward
a machine breathing for him
a man my age
perhaps never
to age further
and though I'm leaner
and have never smoked
(well hardly)
the bill can come due
at any time...
but maybe if I keep working these legs
these lungs
this heart
maybe I can extend my credit
just a bit longer

Thanks, both. There's reason to be hopeful - he began to rouse yesterday, and seemed to be fighting the endotrach. He's breathing on his own now, and the doctors hope to bring him around enough to start assessing the damage. Until then we just have to wait.

Walt, Steve, Judih - thank you so much for your thoughts. Your vibes might just have turned the tide - he can sit (with some assistance), he's talking (still a bit confused), and today's exam indicates that a stent (rather than bypass surgery) might be all that he needs to recover. So I guess there really is a Santa Claus!

Glad that your brother-in-law is doing better than when you first wrote the poem. That's the most important thing.

The poem is effective as a poem. Succinct writing that gives the whole picture at the time of its writing.

We go until we're gone - but sounds like it's not gone time yet for your brother-in-law, Sasha.
And keep walking that dog, mine gives me a workout I could not buy. 8)
Doll, you may have found a place of rest but I'm still on the trail.
