A Humanitarian Lunch

Post by theirishsea » December 30th, 2016, 1:16 pm

You must have met
people who eat alone,
have nothing to say,
stare like stone,
a little schist;
unless they show bruises, scars,
recount operations,
the totaling of cars,
prate a melancholy rhapsody of suicide,
or utter obscenities to you, themselves,
what can you do?
Empathize with silence that fidgets
With fork, knife, interrupted by the
tom-tom of table and spoon?

However, if you get that hint of malignant humor,
jab them with the old funny bone,
pump laughing gas,
bring God and Dr. Phil to their bearing,
bare your own wretched, trivial soul,
distract with politics, sex or religion,
try to remember punchlines,
munch crackers loudly,
slurp your soup and/or drink,
talk of others,
not them, not you,
throw out batting averages and WHIP,
or break out in attention-getting song.
Yes, be that positive anode,
That river rat with adorable eyes,
That Hamilton cast,
Tap dance on tables
And they, those morose roses
Of sin and death and bad breath
Will be so amazed they will forget themselves
And either leap on stage,
All harmonized,
Or beep your electric shine
All simonized,
And the absurd will curdle
Like a newly deposited dog-turd.
That shit works every time.
Okay, so you are arrested
For making a scene.
Mental Health requires
Being mantic and serene.
The Irish Sea Is Always In Turmoil, Even When Calm.

you may end up where you are heading
