Damn hippies

Post by mnaz » January 14th, 2018, 8:58 am

Damn hippies,
easiest diss of all.
Let's get back to our
full-on planet rape
and chemicals.

Consider the organically grown
Non g m o cookie
I think it’s ten dollars

Sugar is still the same
Cannot Get enough in my viens

Dreaming of parties where I am thin rich and beautiful
Eating cake and drinking champagne
Not blacking out and sleeping with the groom

Being one is way harder
I guess people just look at me and say “you look cool”
What does that look like? I dunno - but in my bad days * - when I only want to eat
I am happy that I am a recovering hippie
Some of my friends are not feeling too well
I can tell you that talk is cheap
That it’s nice that weed is legal - but what about all my outlaw friends that did time for growing?
I have some hippie questions for you

Sorry, I'm writing too many sardonic jabs lately. Like this one ... It's way too easy to diss the hippies. I remember the derogatory comments on LK that Hester Prynne dealt with, and that one kid who kept saying he likes to throw rocks at hippies..

Okay, granted, the '60s-'70s counterculture movement had too many posers, waste-cases and hangers-on, and it was no doubt pushed too far and/or exploited-- but that doesn't mean the movement was worthless. Quite the opposite. For example, the environmental concerns that grew at the same time, and seemed a branch of the main movement, were important. It's lucky we paid more attention to the environment for awhile and were able to clean up as much pollution as we did-- or we'd be drowning in even more of our own shit than we are now.

So yeah, the hippies were (arguably) too far out of balance to the "far out" ideals of anti-materialism, but society today is even more alarmingly out of balance in the opposite direction toward material obsession-- which seems to be a highly dangerous imbalance, possibly capable of doing irreversible harm to the rock...

I’m happy I don’t think there’s anything to recover from. I was a hippie. I still am a hippie. I’m proud to hold onto the most valuable ideals from any social group.

Peace
Love
Respect
Sharing
Taking care of each other
Respecting and caring for the earth and all natural resources
Nurturing each other
Supporting each other’s gifts and talents
Putting music and art in the forefront of social connection and recognizing the spiritual connection and healing of both
Oh ... the list goes on and on and on

What is there to diss? Not a thing. Totally nothing.

Exactly. The ideals are solid cosmic wisdom (and just good science at times). The Diss is usually knee-jerk and misguided.

I have to be careful because if you are one- cutting your hair or driving a Subaru will not hide the lethal birthmark- know for sudden outbursts of adventure- throbbing thumbs longing for the good ole days of hitchhiking- recovery is from all the drugs- perhaps you were the one that could take it or leave it- this girl wanted more- so hippie women like me have had to learn how to back up a little bit because so many run screaming when they find out what politics are at work inside this mind and soul—the body coming around on a racehorse-
The other day when that missle alert went out to Kaua’i- and Hawaiian islands- every skin cell of hippie I had was reactivated-all preppies I knew and still love were in fact stable human beings with a vision-
Ben and jerry used to run the food co- op in my commune-
Lots of avacados

While hippies in the hog farm were also extras on Star Trek during the week- living in the Santa Cruz mountains
With the Grateful Dead and the wavy gravy man
Geodesic domes and the band” spare change”
Panhandling for beer

The "Summer of Love" gained it's reputation in 1967 when Haight Ashbury became the so-called center of a rebellion of sorts, i.e. hundreds and then thousands of young people flocked to that very area near Golden Gate Park, The media, at first based in SF, covered the early beginnings which soon became a worldwide phenomenon. Some reporter tagged the people who came to this gathering "hippies" for lack of a better word. It was quickly accepted by the media and now they had a catchy name for the people who never actually called themselves "hippie" and even found the name a joke.

That resentment of the name grew that summer of 1967 to the point that one of the groups named "the diggers" late in that summer staged a ceremony, "Death of the Hippie" in Golden Gate. The story below -
At the end of summer 1967, The Diggers declared the “death” of the hippie movement and burned an effigy of a hippie in Golden Gate Park. The Haight-Ashbury scene had deteriorated dramatically. The Haight Ashbury district simply could not accommodate the influx of hundreds of thousands of hippies. Many hippies, some no older than teenagers, took to living on the street, panhandling, and drug dealing. Problems such as malnourishment, disease, and drug addiction grew prominent in the Haight community. Crime and violence in the area skyrocketed as homeless drug addicted hippies stole to survive and drug dealers moved in to control the drug trade. By the end of 1967, many of the hippies and musicians who initiated the Summer of Love moved on, leaving many misgivings about the hippie culture, particularly with regards to their drug abuse and lenient morality.
I left the area before that event but given the time I would have loved to at least see it. I was one of the multitude that found that name at best "corny" but fateful... one could see that reporter who first used it lit a bonfire and the name stuck, still in use over 50 years later.... and for me a perfectly unfulfilling word for a Summer that changed the world in so many ways for so many people.

I have a birthmark that looks like the Hawaiian islands on the back of my thigh
Lenny Bruce s daughter and I took naked pictures of each other with a Polaroid
Summers in fields where we rode horses and played with rattlesnakes
We thought that we were beyond life and death
We wore strange evening gowns in the forest and ate lsd
Had sex with your spirit
Was spiritual
Then I had to listen to the hummingbird

They say
There are people that hear a constant buzzing magnetic energy
They tell scientists somewhere where having gifts is appreciated

"They should just cut their hair and Get-a-Job." As I was coming up that's one of the first things I remember hearing.
