Some Penny Haiku, Part 6
For “Penny Haiku”:
LATE SUMMER DAZE
By Steve Plonk
When Joe Pye weed is in bloom &
When thistle shines purple in
Late afternoon,
Sun shines upon my smile,
As remembering all of you…
Late summer…
Our travels on blue roads &
Hearing peeps of toads,
We ride in our old red Saturn sedan*,
Near Lake Lanier, like we have a plan
For good eats & great times
In mystic afternoons…
Down home in our old beau town,
Still wonderful after
All these years…
No worries—
It’s all good…
A great visit.
(Fondly remembering our
car, as “the red shark”.)
CULTURE FEST
By Steve Plonk
Daughter & I saw belly dancers,
Asian Indian dancers
Mexican hat dancers
Cuban dancers,
With sitar/table music
Salsa music &
Foccacia bread & hot dogs,
Special teas—
We bought CD, “Cassidy” & catnip…
(October 4, 2014)
COUNTY FAIR—weekend before
By Steve Plonk
All three of us went to see
Mustang horses in show,
Livestock show
Chickens & bunnies,
Pavilion exhibit of crafts & flowers,
Free Massage/chiropractor adjustment,
Antique cars &
Master gardeners
No ducklings in the pet exhibit this year—
We were transported in school busses to
A drop off point—
Brought homemade grits home.
BREWSTER, THE ROOSTER
By Steve Plonk
Brewster, the rooster
Crows at dawn,
He keeps on keeping on
He guards the henhouse
He’s tougher than a grouse.
“Doodlely doo”
Says Brewster,
“Cock-a-doodlely doo”
“I sing for my hens
I sing for you…”
“Through is icy fog
I continue to sing
‘Cause that’s just what I do,
Cock a doodle lie doo”
“Upon some fresh scratch I chew,
Then I sing again
Cocka doodlely doo to
My friends, the hens…”
We’ve a rooster in our backyard
He’s “quite a card”.

EMPTY LOT (lyric)
By Steve Plonk
Empty lot, empty lot
Fronted by old Anzio Road,
A most agreeable spot
Was this empty lot—
We played sandlot baseball,
Kickball & touch football—
We walked the dog,
Had snowball fights,
We even built a snow fort there
…in Empty Lot—
We took walks in nearby woods
To the pet cemetery—
Lingered by graves of horses
From the calvary…
***
An agreeable spot
We filled with play & laughter
Never thinking it
Would be remembered
Fifty years after…
Empty lot, empty lot
Fronted by old Anzio Road.

BOAT CROSSING JORDAN (gospel lyric)
By Steve Plonk
People get ready
For the boat crossing Jordan,
Just believe in the Lord & climb aboard,
You need no ticket
For the boat cross Jordan,
Just believe in the savior &
He’ll ferry you home.
People get ready
To board the boat crossing Jordan,
Just believe in the Lord &
He”ll pay your fare,
Hop on board the boat
Crossing Jordan,
The Lord, our Pilot,
Will see you get there…
(variation of an old gospel tune)

IN THE LAND OF "ME OH MY"
By Steve Plonk
In the land of “Me Oh My”
Each thought makes us
Prepare to fly,
Each sentence
Begins with a sigh
As we are lifted
Up to fly,
In the land of “ME OH MY”.
Each day we see new clouds
Each day plow new ground,
In contentment
We are found
In the land of “ME OH MY”

HOLLY TREE
By Steve Plonk
Near our front porch
Is a holly tree,
With twittering
Mockingbirds &
Their cousins, the sparrows—
A sleepy morning is
Filled with birdsong.

"Penny Haiku: For Rosie"
By Steve Plonk
A tisket, a tasket
Kitty in a bicycle basket,
I'm grinning from ear to ear,
Bringing her far & near,
This song is sung
As reflectors spin
On the bicycle wheel rung.

SHADOWS OF THE PAST
BY Steve Plonk
There are passages in time,
Where shadows of the present are
Left behind,
Only intuition & the mind
May discern these shadows now past...
PROUD HIGHWAY
By Steve Plonk
Folks, stay away from
Those who lie & cheat,
Vote to getaway
With your feet,
To another town
Outward bound,
Take it to the proud highway.

MERRY CHRISTMAS SWEET CAT, LEE
By Steve Plonk
(1)
Sweet cat, Lee,
Labels you & me,
Chases her ball
Across the rug,
We get the ball back
When we give it a tug/
(2)
Lee gazes lovingly
At our Christmas tree,
She gently labels it,
Then scampers with glee
To get her treats
Our sweet cat, Lee.

PENNY HAIKU(S): Maxims
By Steve Plonk
a) If you're an old toad
wedged in the rocks,
The fox ain't
Gonna get you.
b) The whirlwind
has come full circle
Back to the fields
Next to the root cellar--
We seek shelter.
c) I remember Dr. Pagder's adage:
"Growing old is not for sissies"...

THE TREES WEAR GREEN
By Steve Plonk
The snow has stopped blowing
The storm has stopped raining
The cattle are lowing
The roosters are crowing
The ground has stopped flooding
The trees wear green
What a wonderful Spring scene
We see lovers lean together
Storms passed over to good weather
Nature's strength fills me with wonder
The trees wear green,
Home is warm & serene...
Birds roost in the trees
As the trees wear green.

DREAM OF DANCING PETS
By Steve Plonk
Within a whirligig
My dead pets were dancing
Suspended in the air
With the leaves
Like whirling "dervishes"
