Newsweek story retraction

I'm curious as to what people think of this, if anything.
I blew my stack when they showed Rummy on tv, admonishing that "things like this cause death......."
As if he should talk. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
(This is our government folks. Full of double standards.)
Shrug. Go charge another pizza for dinner right? Pretend it doesn't affect you. Live your life as if nothing were different.
But just wait until it does affect you. Heh, they'll time it so for the majority, they won't have time to know what hit them. They'll just be standing in soup lines, still not believing what's happening right in front of them......

I can't help but think that newsweek is being forced to make this retraction, despite the fact that the accounts are more than likely true. Seems I was hearing about this kind of thing long before Newsweek ever dared print it.

Truth just ain't allowed to be in print when it's the truth eh?
I can't believe how stupid I've been all these years, believing in America, believing that there really was freedom and integrity.
I feel so trapped, and degraded anymore within this administration. And it's getting worse everyday.
450 deaths in Iraq since April. Bodies found, some decapitated, strewn like debris. But fear not, the war is over.
Rummy says, that this military "restructuring", is just a necessary post-war move.

I'm with you, sounds like a forced retraction. I mean considering the guards beat, sexually abused, tortured and in some cases even killed prisoners...it's not hard to figure the guards would inflict further humility and frustration upon their captives by destroying the Koran...lets face it, if they could treat people so badly, what the hell would a book read and worshipped by the "enemy" mean to them especially since they don't follow that religion. For them, it's just another way to get at the "enemy".

let's suppose the Newsweek story was false. big deal. guess what: not everything printed is true. what is disturbing is the the reaction by the gov't, essentially telling Newsweek what to print (i think the latest was that they, the White House, "encourages" Newsweek to print a story about how much the U.S. loves all faiths, as a way to repair the damage alegedly caused by the Koran story).

what if the White House was obligated to retract and atone for all its falsehoods, or even, simply, its lies? (for example, WMDs...?)

thanks for the link, knip. Read the story. It sounds bizarre. If the item was a tiny little 'gossip' column entry, who the fuck spread the word to Afghanistan citizenry and all those potential rioters?

Was this thing also on TV?
What about those little items such as men stoning their wives to death for committing adultery - no riot there. Just a demonstration by Afghan women, as Tilly has reported.

Someone's gotta stoke the gossip columns with righteous truth and maybe there'll be world reaction.

Newsweek isn't exactly a gossip column, anymore than the New Yorker is a newsletter. but that is an interesting question you've raised: how exactly were these rioters made aware of the report and is it really plausible to suppose that it is just this report that incensed said rioters? and not, say, the wars that are going on?
