the jam always turns a little
to the new world
i mean the one where pandemic
is on the tongue
but people figure out new ways to get by
it's just different
and frustrating in ways we could not
have imagined a couple years back
but the jam must go on
we can't let this thing, this ever present
thing ruin our lives
we have brains unlike the rote killer
we can dream unlike this single-minded
destroyer and we will rise above
beat it back with a stick if we have to
because the perpetual jam must go on
fear not wireman of the stars. we got your back

no one can tell where the jam will go
that's because it's a jam, man

poet of the milky way
lay some good shit on me
I still can look at your marvelous paint job
in my apartment, the skill and love
it took to persevere to completion
and tho you are not in bodily form
your artwork is still radiant on my walls
and trim, even tho 10 years old now
all I need to do is turn my head
for another angle...and I don't intend
to ever touch those areas so prevalent
in my living space
and loved our time in my car each day
my drive down to Greektown to pick you up
and our drive back to my house
and the there was the drive home...
plenty of time to talk about art and poetry
and all the crazy people running the world
a terrific routine for many months as I transitioned
to single life after a long marriage
and you had come home from Cincinnati
to your place of birth and later carousing
and you showed me your old haunts, and told me
stories of madness and joy, and we weren't that different
turns out....two hoodlum Baltimore boys trying
to find our way, and so thank you for these wonderful
memories to cherish, and well one day soon...I'll see you again

to honor and respect the grief

we just want to celebrate their livers.sometimes i am not so surer about that first thought word thing
I felt like they were heroes who kept me going when i needed them

at times we must look up
because the road straight ahead
is dark and overgrown
we must set our sights on the theoretical heavens
look for comets with tails so bright
they illuminated the imaginations of the masses
look for supernovas to stream the way to the insight needed
to make a more equitable world for everyone to share
I'm getting pretty damn sick hearing stories of Elon Musk's whims
And Bezos' Amazon without any snakes and beautiful birds
and Virgin Airlines that doesn't take me where I want to go
if it's so Virgin why do I feel like I'm getting fucked from behind
Oh pardon the language and insinuation, but I'm just pissed off
knowing about the all the misery that a few billionaires could actually
do something about, but choose to amass wealth so great
they will never be able to get any enjoyment from.......So WHY
WHY hoard when so many are suffering
I just don't understand the thinking here

we may choose to look down
the colour green bursting through a sidewalk
a sudden flower in a strange place
a pesky fly, a brown spider
signs of life, tiny whispers of growth

saw this fellow watching me two days ago.
well he was probably more interested in his lunch
and he waited above the river on a special branch
that allows a wide visual of the comings and goings
but my ego wanted to believe he cared about me as well
as a fellow traveler in the woods, and though I have never
been able to fly per se, I have flitted among nature
with my walking stick and my muddy boots....and the river
was stupendous and gave me hope, that my life was rich
not from a monetary sense but in the common sense
that nature is substantive and rejuvenating, and worth
something far greater than material goods, and well I already
knew it but, my faith was restored, as the tank was running low
and the woods always is my friend, my lover, and companion

Many years ago I was blessed to encounter a river otter up close. After spotting one another, it was curious enough to approach me. On the one hand wanting a closer look, I was afraid such a meeting could be explosively unstable - so when he was about a yard off I adopted a threatening stance. It jumped back with a hiss, reared up and watched me for a moment. When I did nothing further, it simply turned and continued on its way, apparently taking no offense at my request to be left alone.

great story roy and comments......it is what I love about poetry, the spoken word from individuals.....it's the stories we tell that affirm our humanity, as travelers among the people, the animals, the mountain, the sky.....as we all try to piece together some meaning.......as we trek in and out of our own personal experiences looking essentially for common ground, and when he share our stories, we understand there is always so much more to grasp as we embrace the commonality ....

fallen trees frozen
as the brackish water gelled them
in place for the time being
sticking a limb into the frigid air
their body submerged....the light
danced across the top of the former
swimming hole for ducks and geese.....
where were they hiding, didn't even see a raptor
today......maybe too cold to look for lunch
when your fat belly can tide you over
just the darting of robins and cardinals, sparrows
