I read this in one of Joe Campbell's books,
and I considered him an intellectual giant
beyond any possible sort of reproach.

I've always been uncomfortable with '42' btw. But for me it had more to do with what I was taught in church at a young age. They had a whole mythology of numerology, and 42 was bad, but just add 2 and 44 was solid. Subtract 2 and forty was some sort of transformative thing, both good and bad. Yeah, but '42,' that was in between, iffy. I mean, 6 times 7. Six plus seven equals 13, right? And you know how people feel about 13 ...
