whoa. is it just me or does that seem like A LOT??? and what, by their definition is your "immediate" area? in your state? your city? your postal code??
i went and checked it out, it's strictly american, and the .ca suffix didn't pull up anything. i wonder what the canadian equivalent might be.
sure would be interesting to know that kind of thing...

I didn't know they had this in Canada.
In the US, the obligitory registration for sex offenders is called "Megan's Law."
I think registration should be outlawed.
Someone commits a crime, he does his prison time, then when he gets out he has to pay over and over and over again for the rest of his life based on this registration. It essentially gives him a life sentence.
Not just the offender is effected. Many people are effected.
For instance, people can't sell their real estate because someone down the street had a sex offense charge. Children are scared in their own neighborhoods.
It's just not right.

Q. Who will have access to the National Sex Offender Database?
This database will only be accessible by accredited police agencies in every province and territory either directly or indirectly through their Provincial/Territorial Sex Offender Registry (SOR) Centres.
US or international police agencies will not have access to the National Sex Offender Database.
Every police force in Canada will have direct or indirect access to the National Sex Offender Database but only for the purpose of investigating unsolved crimes of a sexual nature.
There are criminal penalties for the misuse of the data either by persons authorized to have access to it or by third parties who may acquire National Sex Offender Database information.
Access to this personal information will be tightly controlled and used for police investigation purposes and as authorized by law.

D, I agree and disagree witcha. It's strangely reminiscent of Hawthorne's Scarlet letter, men, walking around with their sex crimes posted on the internet. But that's just it. People can look it up on the national registry if they so choose, but you don't have to walk around with a shirt that says "Kiss me, I'm a rapist." or "Statutory rocks." It's only fair that if they commited such crimes, we, upon our own interest gets to know about it. I don't think children should be afraid, so much as made aware, that danger lurks around every corner. There are so many kids who just aren't street smart, and they're the best kind of prey for the true perverts who snatch them off the streets and steal their innocence. They did their time, sure, but a lot of rapist get off with a coupla years and that's it. So if this registry helps to give them a little extra bit of hell, then so be it. It's the price they pay for commiting the crime. GA, do you know, I was on myspace when I found out about that site, and all the others had no higher than like 90 in their immediate area (i.e zip code) and then here comes Kayla with A HUNDRED AND TWENTY FUCKING ONE! Gah. That's just creepy.

In some communities in Texas, they make sex offenders place a sign in their front yards to notify their neighbors that they are craven perverts.
Story Time.
I was locked up with a guy who was about 60 years old. He had worked all his life as a construction worker and had retired and bought a lake house. He was on disability and he was getting dilaudid prescribed to him for back pain from work injuries.
One of his neighbors was a seventeen year old dope whore. She started coming over to his house and fucking him for his dilaudids. He made the mistake of taking a photo of her with her legs all cocked back over her ears and it somehow got into the hands of her parents. BAM! Twenty-five years.
And not only that when the guy gets out he'll probably have the scarlet letter pinned on him too.
Justice? I don't know.

It IS true, that some people really get it stuck too them. The ironic thing is that the people who commit the most heinous crimes often times get off pretty easy. That guy got a shit hand, but it's like the matter of the mice and the big piece of cheese. Everybody's fast and they snatch up the pieces, then here comes the little mouse to get his piece and there's none left. Shitty, sure. But that's life.
