I did actually. Unfortunatley my reaction like
I said was somewhat delayed. Don't see that
stuff every day. I just came off the tennis courts
and was about to purchase some bannas and
there he was. The good news is the woman with
the child wasn't aware.

The word penalty is the problem. What is a penalty? It seems like a long version of confession. If he served his time, paid his penalty, then poof, it's over? Go out, re-offend again, serve another penalty, if you get caught again......
Or does serving the penalty, automatically include sucessful rehab and good chances the offense won't be repeated on being released?
How do we know what length of penalty is required for someone to heal from committing crimes?

If legalizing marijuana required that one wear a sign warning people that they are a dope smoker i'd wear one proudly. Why can't a sex offender wear a sign that says, I'm a sex offender, or a murderer wear a sign saying I'm a murderer? Then we'd know to keep an eye on our kids around the sex offender, to keep a gun handy when we were around the murderer, and folks would know to hide their stashes when the dopesmoker was around!

I say, speak your truth. That's how I see it for sex offenders, murderers, thieves, etc., at least let us know your deal......so those around can act accordingly, but still try to get to know you.
I mean, it's only fair.
Might help cut down on crime and re-offenses too....

i don't know, hester... would your DOPESMOKER sign cut down on your offences? what if a SEXUAL PREDATOR sign became cool, like wearing a DEA t-shirt or camoflage pants did? i don't like the sound of them wearing that with pride. i like my right to privacy. when i'm applying for a job, i don't want a potential employer to know all of my past transgressions. i may not regret them, but i like that it's a matter of intimacy who knows certain things about me. you folks here at Studio 8 i could say anything to, but my bosses? my teachers?

labelling... how far does it go?

what if i had to wear a sign every day that said GENDER CONFUSED or PROMISCUOUS BY SOME STANDARDS everyday, everywhere i go? and plant that sign out on my front lawn? what if there were signs that said OF MIXED RACE or RECOVERING SHOPLIFTER or MEDICATED FOR DEPRESSION or LEARNING DISABLED or BARREN or PROSTITUTE or INSIDER TRADING?

no, i think it's nobody's business to be outed against our wills. let it go on my permanent file somewhere, but let that file drawer be locked or at least hard to get to.

oh, we could go further

suppose that the t-shirts were smart and wired into our brains and our most secret and depraved thoughts were broadcast on our chests or backs. Wouldn't that be fun?

well, first of all, mine would change every 1/2 second because my attention span is so short.
but it would say something like,
Ooooh, can I suck your titties?
I need a cigarette.
mmmm, that girl is eating too many ding dongs.
is my heart beating too fast?
the sky is extraordinarily blue today.
can I suck your titties?
the average man thinks of sex every seven seconds.
how does Play Misty For Me go?
can I suck your titties?
I'm hungry

stuff like that

"sex offender" is a peculiar label.

I guess I don't ever think sex offender could be cool Glammy. And plenty of people think dopesmokers aren't cool. They could stay away from me. I could stay away from the sex offenders. And so on.
It has it's kinks. yes. It could go too far as it already has. That's just the way it is.

But what about that word "penalty". What does it mean?
How does serving it absolve the crime?

yeah, i'm totally down with you there Hester. time served. what indeed does that rectify? how does that return to a family their lost child? how does that erase a kid's fear?

Speaking of time they say it heals all wounds.

they don't say that to rape victims. they don't say that to parents whose children were stolen, raped and murdered, and not necessarily in that order.

that's the funny thing about clichés, they don't really heal anything but pretense.

anyone whose been thru a trauma such as these knows it isn't time, but only strength that can heal those kinds of wounds.
