grammar/punctuation poetry

Post by joel » August 1st, 2005, 5:32 pm

[introduction]

(I know of several newer highways laid
by older unpaved, less-lane minor roads
that used (I’m sure) to seem quite adequate
before infinity moved in next door,
High Occupancy Vehicle dreams of
but ever faster movement. So my words—
poetic license loves to drive in fast
and flashy words; and often I trade in
the access road of grammar and its pot-
hole punctuation on deluded thoughts
that smoother pavements under words outweighs
the power of convention-valued dots.
I’ve written out in words alone my loves,
but can I write lone punctuated verse?)

the challenge is to write out emotions/thoughts/insights with only punctuation--no words (other than the names of the used punctuation if so desired)

this might be way dumb...but i was having fun with it.  if the challenge makes no sense, I'm posting my attempt at a "punctuation poem" after this, wirtten both with the signs and the words. :!:

:? you started with a fourteen line poem then replied with eight lines of punctuation. Is this what might be regarded as a paralell construction

as long as we are using symbols can I sneak in a few html things like // or <> </p>

still strugling with the html thingy.

While we are on the subject of punctuation here is maybe my favorite poem on the subject.

" (quote) I question (?) whether Susan Hahn was on her period (.)
or was this just a comma (,) within her coma abbreviating
her exclamations (!!) over the apostrophe (') of short hyphenings (--)
running unpuntuated in her colon (;)... (pause)" (close quote)
