I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say we've all played games. We've all played sports, some attempt at playing an instrument or two, maybe even been in a play, so why don't we wake up and get ready to go play at our places of employment?
Just think of how much more tolerable jobs would become - "Hey!! I'm going to play employee today!!! Great! I got promoted to play assistant to the assistant manager! Far-fucking-out!" There would be a sense of enthusiasm rather than "O! Fuck!! It's Monday already. Shit! It seems the weekend was only 8 hours long... goddamn."
When we use the word 'play' it removes the seriousness... and that is good. Pity the poor souls that no longer play poker or baseball or golf, but have to approach these one-time fun things like a business. "Sorry, I don't play golf, it's my job..." And the spectator so often drools over the idea of playing for a living... it only happens to the fortunate few.
No wonder the latest statistic on American workers - they don't work the full eight hours that they are getting paid for... how could they? It would be too stressful to work 40+ hours a week without a little play in between. But if the perception of play vs. work were reversed, think of it - far more productivity!

I used to love playing in the mud as a kid. That's pretty special I know but I had a job as an adult that felt that way.
Hauling rock. One job was hauling to a huge muddy field that they were laying down a base to build on. Drove a huge old Autocar, it had a steel skid welded under the motor, kind of like a sled. We could never make to the center of the field but we would come down the road like Evil Knevil going to jump the Grand Canyon. If i was going fast enough I slide a long way. Then the truck would sink down to the axles and a D-9 Cat would pull me the rest of the way. A lot of fun:
I worked another job in the mud with a Veteran who had a steel plate in his head courtesy of the Uncle Sam. We were hauling pipe to construction site. Andy's truck sank down to the axles. The pipe was in a steam-ship container; those things are hardly ever loaded legal. That truck must have weighed fifty tons. And Andy is out there with his shoulder to it trying to push it out, he tells me to get in the truck and rock it while he pushes. I remember a saying from the seventies, "To The Max." I said, "Andy the war is over, its peace time, lets wait for a wrecker.

Nothing worse than a wonderful job with a crazy boss. One of the best jobs I ever had was projectionist in a drive-in movie. My boss was a gun nut want to be cop. The families would sit in the front and the college kids from VMI, and Washington and Lee would take the last row, party row. When the kids would get too rowdy and disturb the families he would go back to try and settle things down. One night he came back red faced angry, said he was going to his car to get his gun. The hillbilly woman who ran the concession stand was
She asked me to go out and deal with it. I suppose he was ashamed of him self. Because it was not to long after that he found reasons to fire us both. Peculiar thing to me was a Quaker headed the non-profit group that operated the drive-in.

While at work (Potbelly Sandwich Works) I was sharing a joke with a co-worker just before dressing a customer's sandwich. "Do You guys get paid like extra to joke or something?" She asked. "Everytime I come in here, you guys are always kidding around. "No." I told her. "We get fired if we don't joke." My co-worker and I immediately had a nice laugh about that, but the woman didn't seem to get it. We have a lot of fun at my job, otherwise, we get bored. Come on, sandwiches and hand-dipped milkshakes? There's only so much excitement one can put into that without a little humor. We play around a lot. It gets the job done.

You know anybody got some trucks? Such a rip off with those truck driving schools. I learned to drive in about four hours. Living in DC after Spiderwoman’s abortion, this in the early seventies before it got complicated to get a commercial license. No tests, just a statement from an employer that you were qualified. It was a chance to get out of town. The circus was in town and they needed a driver for the elephant truck. I went down and lied to them. They were in a desperate situation and so was I. She was just sick of me, and the kindest thing I could do for her was just go away. And they had to have those elephants in Buffalo in two days. The boss told me to go hook up the truck tractor to the trailer. I had no idea what I was doing. But he hired me anyway; he drove the truck out of city traffic. Once out on the open road he stopped and I took over. The road was everything to me for twenty years, but you don't want that big sister. But something local would be good maybe. Dump trucks are pretty ez money. You don't have to deal with the public but god must have loved Richard head truck drivers because he made so many. But we are just are talking about a J.O.B. while you are in school? Not sure how that would work out. It can make for some long days.

I worked for an head hunting outfit located in Des Plaines. this was about sixty six I think. What were you doing in 1966? Don't answer that, just Zen thingy, maybe?
nice to see you, not sure what Asperger's syndrome is exactly, kind of a high functioning autism, but it leave people idiots when it comes to social interactions, I say innappropriate things some times. RE: my lighthouse post to that feisty little rodent. That post about bizarre and uncanny sounding words by your buddy over on fireplace. That is what happened with spades. Now everytime I use it I wonder. I told LR he had paid his dues in spades. Spades such a powerful suite in bridge. Maybe that is what the saying means. paid them in full.

wow cecil..this has kinda been the motto of my work existence,
daily i shout, "I Love My Job!" whilst playin in the rebar patch, & everybody smiles, it's been that way 33 years now..it also sent me to my ultimate playground of wire....got me thru 3 marriges and enlightened my every morning, still with 3rd wife by the way. I always go back to 2 things that really influenced me bout this, krishnamurti's "happy bus driver" talk and a show about an amazon tribe that made an art form of their existence, both blessed turn-ons for me....this is ultimately how i feel.....why do something for 10 hours a day if ya don't love it, that would be wasted life, i'll have nothing to do with it.

Today, after more or less 45 minutes or sermon-like-speech that included items such:
