Funny thing I just noticed.

Post by Rat Bag » August 4th, 2005, 7:37 am

on the phone we are always thinking of what to say next, for fear of 'uncomfortable silences'.

just had phone convo with comfortable-in-oneself mate who would sit for minutes on end, silently, if allowed to.

uncomfortable silences might not be so uncomfortable in person, we can just look around, drag on a cigarette, take a swig of drink, whatever, but they are so amplified on the telephone, have you noticed?

comfortable silence is golden.

i have a friend with whom the bulk of our interaction is comfortable silence. especially on long distance phonecalls, which we find especially worthwhile.

Yes, it is strange to me that silence must always be filled.

Fill my silence with the silence of you and I shall fill your silence with the silence of me.
How sweet it shall be.
Golden.

Having said that...it is long distance...and silence costs money...so please talk to me. And none of those pesky silences.

[ring... ring...]

"Hello..."

"Hey... Hi!!"

"How you doin'?"

"O, pretty good. How 'bout you?"

"Pretty good..."

"Long time no hear..."

"Yeah, it's been a while..."

"What's new..?"

"Not much. How 'bout you?"

"Not much."

[silence drifts in... quietly swallowing up the conversation that kinda ended...]

"Nice hearing from you..."

"Yea... nice hearing your voice again..."

[again that silence begins surfacing... embracing the conversationalists]

"How's the weather up there?"

"It's been really nice! How's it down there?"

"Cool! Well, not really 'cool' but, you know, cool. Not hot, not cold..."

"Yeah... I know what you mean. Same here..."

[silence again returns... like a memory fondling the imagination]

"Your silence... I like it. I miss our time together sitting in silence."

"Yeah, me too! That's why I called. To hear your silence."

"Ah... you're nice."

"Shhh.... I... I wanna hear your silence..."

"hmmmmmmm......."

"That's it. A little more... please. For old times sake..."

whispering - "okay....."

[time passes easily between the two entwined in each others silence until the next sound]

"I've listened to your sweet silence for months in my own silent times. I just wanted to hear it from you live... like right now!"

"It's been good... damn good! Thanks so much for calling."

"I'm so glad you were home. I... I don't know what I would've done if you didn't answer. I've missed your silence that much..."

"I'm glad you called when you did. I was in lonely silence before you called. You made the silence so much more silent!"

"Shhh.... when you talk like that I just wanna be silent with you so much more. God! I love our silence.."

"O, hush! Don't ever break our silence together... never. Our silence is soooo hot!"

"Whooo...!"

"Ahhhh....."

"Hmmmm..."

Awkward silence.

I'm speechless.

Isn't the word "awkward" the most awkward word you have ever seen?

To me, it is.

But I don't wanna talk about it.

If you don't want to talk about Awkward"
how about: Aardvark.

The Aardvark belongs to:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Cordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Tubulidentates
Family: Orycteropodida
Genus: Orycteropus
Species: afer

Married to a man that can't shut up. I shared her pain. All the stereotypes of women as yackety yak, I have known more men like that than women. Or maybe I am just more interested in listening to women than men.

It has been so long ratbag almost fifty years, but I remember being on the phone for hours with my true love, I still remember her phone number. Long silences just knowing she had the phone to her ear was like being there with her. Love on the wire.

I think any silence is uncomfortable with someone you're not comfortable with, whether in front of them or on the phone. However silences are weird on the phone cause you can't see if someone's doing something or if they're just not talking and then you get paranoid....paranoid android.

I'm pretty ok with silences I guess, if I'm with my friends. Silences with people you don't really know are no fun.
