Panta I guess I am confused. When Clay says isolation I think of someone who cuts off all contact with friends and family, sits in a darkened room and lives a silicon life. no I don't feel I am isolated, I don't do bars, even so I don't think Ino I don't feel that at all. THis is all about contact for me. So used to sitting in a truck cut off from everyone except that cb radio, but the radios got pretty trashy i didn't listen very much. Except in emergencies and bad weather. When I stumbled onto litkicks it was like I was back out there on the boulevard strolling aong with my friends (corny I know) except there was always interesting conversations going on. this is the road for me. Except it is now a global convoy. nice to see ya btw

Neil Postman points out that Internet "communities" ( like this one) aren't real communities because they don't demand mutual sacrifice, among other things.

Because I have been a professional writer and teacher of writing for forty years, as well as a purveyor of graven images, I use written language to craft a persona, like any writer. Anyone who reads the language I cyber-hurl into the ether is free to construe any kind of "person" he or she wants from those electronically printed symbols.
The Internet is only an armature, as the students of semiotics might say, for hanging up signs.
Whether one is "reaching out" or merely engaging in a kind of self-gratification or masturbation depends on the reception of those signs and the final re-interpretation of that reception when someone posts in return, or writes an e-mail.
I sometimes refer to the word-besmirched screen as one-dimensional because, even for a skilled writer and reader, the rendering of tone is quite difficult ( hence emoticons, capital letters and varied type "faces"-- giving a "human" face to something which cannot literally possess one).
To answer your question, Clay-- I'd say I use my computer to find readers and get smacked with unexpected responses-- wild, Burroughsian scats and riffs like "Stilltrucking" can dish out-- your keen and hilarious invective, the calm karma-love, poetry and shimmer of "judih", the quizzical and sharp-minded but vulnerable wit and prosodic mastery and lively, imaginative gymkhana of a "Doreen" poem . . .
And, of course, there's the occasional miracle of hearing "Hester's" marvelous vocalizing . . .
And so on.
I have "met" voices on the Internet ( and even that expression involves me in a metaphor) belonging to persons who begged off meeting face-to-face because they described themselves as "a horrible disappointment" in person.
I use the Internet the same way I use my voice, my costume, and my drawings-- to conceal and reveal at once, like any artist.

isolation in a sense of withdrawal/solitude (deriving from isola = island) as a way to focus and grope for the inner form through giving yourself voice and shape is what i was talking about... the mutilated silicon life in a darkened room you're speaking of is something that can happen but should be avoided.Panta I guess I am confused. PantaI got a telephone and family here, they keep me in touch, I work at home so there is a feeling of cave dwelling, the grocery store is a block away. I can go for days with out seeing anyone, but the phone always rings. I spend way too much here on studio eight I know, but trying to make a lemon out lemonade. Walter Kaufmann so interesting to me. Raised protestant converted to Judaism and then found out both sets of his grandparents were Jews. I like the NIetzsche he talks about, Tacitus warned about the man of one book. The book I am warry of is Nietzsche. I would be in NYC standing out pamphlets for Jews for Jesus if it were not for him.

I got a spider web mind, I think about all my random text boxes as inter connected points on a web. How they might link up to form a pattern. Like a connect the dots puzzle.
Atit sorry to hear about your grandfather. Someplace on studio 8 me or stilltrucking called you grandaugher, I did not read about his illness till afterwards. I was thinking about the Navajo custom of calling old people grandfather. I hope evrything will be ok, my grandparents gave me most of what I remember as a happy childhood.

thank you, no big deal at all about the grand daughter thing, hell, thats why i first liked litkicks, felt like i had a home and people to look up too. artists and writters are all about being an individual but i've always felt like the ever listening understudy to you guys, whats that Kerouac line about how he spends his time chasing people around that intrest him, thats been me my whole life. i've always found that "older," have intreting things to say, and i've always been intrested in listening, never in fully making up my mind but just seeing things from different perspectives.
i think i'm going to write about my experiences at the "old folks home" but i'm not much of a writter, again, i'm more of a great whitness.

remeinds me of the "old folks" home, theres this one lady that stands by the door and i say hi to her everytime but i'm always worried baecause sometimes she talks to me and asks me to do things i cant do, or that don't make sence. like sometimes she thinks i'm her kid, or this one time she wanted me to take her to get some sleep and she didn't want to go to her room so i didn't know what to do. the people that work there don't even treat them like humans....hell i don't even treat my grandfather like a human because i don't know how and because it makes me feel so uncomfortable.
its so easy to get distracted when your younger because of all the things there are for you to do...i wasn't around for my grandmother's death, everyone was there but i was in college, i didn't even truelly beleive that she was going to die. its weird, i experience things very hard and very fast.
