SINGLE EVENTS:
RESISTING MILITARY RECRUITERS: The "No Child Left Behind" Act contains a provision that requires public high schools to hand over students' private contact information to military recruiters or risk losing vital federal education funds. National and local groups are taking steps to resist this infiltration of public schools and the lives of citizens by the military.
Nationally, the Leave My Child Coalition, which includes groups such as Working Assets and Sojourners, is working to protect children from unwanted military recruiting by getting their names off both the Pentagon and high school recruiting lists. For information on opting out children, go to http://www.leavemychildalone.org/ The site also includes information on planning a "back-to-school" event, including a free DVD on opting out, featuring Cindy Sheehan and former recruiter Jim Massey. Most high schools turn over their lists in October, so Leave My Child Alone suggests scheduling events from Sept 7-30th.
Locally, there are two activities:
Providing alternative information for students: The Pinellas County school administration has refused veterans equal access to furnish information and to speak to students about the military service, denying students and parents their First Amendment rights to receive information that would help them make informed decisions. While Veterans for Peace takes action to overturn this decision, they will be leafleting this Friday, September 9 at Dixie Hollins High School, 4940 62nd St. North in St. Petersburg from 6:15-7:15 PM. The school can be accessed from 38th Ave. North and 54th Ave. N. and 62nd St. N. (Dixie Hollins is west of 66th St.) The leaflet will inform students about their right to opt out of being contacted by military recruiters and give them information that will aid them in their decisions. Participants do not have to be a veteran to participate but must be committed to non-violence. The response to last Friday's leafleting at Gibbs High School was very positive. Activists will gather at a nearby IHOP for breakfast after the leafleting. FMI: Dwight Lawton at (727) 415-0308.
Friday Night Forum: Alternatives to Military Service: Join the St. Petersburg Religious Society of Friends this Friday, September 9 from 7:30-9:30 PM for information on alternatives to the military, including conscientious objector status. The forum will be at the St. Petersburg Friends Meeting House, 130 19th Avenue SE in St. Petersburg. Child care will be provided at the meeting.
