Thanks, Deb, I connected with the VFP jam board and found a friend there, Ward from Baton Rouge. Our VFP chapter here is getting it on. I am participating somewhat, have been to one counter-recruiting event and am scheduled for another this Friday, so, it's really cool you made the connection. There is something really powerful happening here. nadia's blog.

nobody's talkin bout it"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." Theodore Roosevelt "Roosevelt in the Kansas City Star" (149) May 7 1918

WE things
Yes FEMA is a ruined agency due to bush and his corrupt incompetent pals. Yes it is a evil dark path we are headed down. Yes I stand on a street corner in a silent vigil and think I am doing my part.
BUT
Yes Katrina striking New Orleans has revealed the third world in our midst
Yes it has revealed the disaster that was hidden behind the French Quater and the good times.
But
New Orleans is doomed, the city is sinking
The Levees are the problem not the solution
but what ever makes us feel good
what ever makes us feel like we are helping
The problem is us/we
the problem is human nature
yes there are people who are working on a solution
small progress in test studies have reclaimed a few thousand acres
but the talk is of rebuilding new orleans
the talk is making the levees stronger
the talk is to hide the truth
who the hell has strength enough for that
better to think happy thoughts
better to think positive
better to not look at what is on the end of old man river's fork
just call me a fucking liar
as if I care

I am reading this thread with some degree of incredulity.
It started out so well.... so much good information.... so many people taking action to stand up for what they believe in, to get their hands dirty and help others.... It puts me to shame, in some ways....
But I cannot understand the sudden lapse into vitriol and uncivil discourse, a few posts ago. What's up with that?

FOr me it got off on the subject of Katrina and the antiwar effort. There is a Zlatko post about an interview with an old man. I forgot I think it was Tom Englebert doing the interview and the old man was eighty three years old and someone he respected. Engelbert asked him about the anti vietnam war protests and who he had respected in the leadership of the anti war movement and the guy said "no one" For me this is about agenda. Cynthia Sheehan is pure in her motives. But what I do not know about is what the people who are gathering around her, what is their agenda. Sorry mnaz I am going to find the links to the zlatko post. I been talked to like some kind of turd here, I don't mind.

I suppose I got thinking about the next storm, after we deal with the misery from this one. Just my amygdala working too hard I suppose. When I was in the anti war movement I met a lot of smooth operators, they were cutting thier chops for their aspirations of political power. The ones I respected were the veterans them selves, I got hooked up with an outfit called MCHR, the medical cadre for human rights, mostly returning medics and doctors that had only one motive to stop the war. I was a street medic at some of the demonstrations in DC. one guy i met in the "new mobe" the outfit that took over from the old mobe, now that I look back on it I bet those new mobe guys became Regan Republicans in the 80's. they put me on a phone bank to raise money. They got the phone numbers by telling people who came to dc on busses that they needed their phone numbers in case they lost any thing on the bus they would call them.
cynicism,
I suppose I am the guilty one
I hijacked the post with my fears about the flood next time.

http://www.studioeight.tv/phpbb/viewtop ... ght=#29331TD: Can you think of other Cindy Sheehan-like figures in the past who made movements coalesce?
Zinn: In the antiwar movement of the Vietnam years, there wasn't one person,
