I know that Doreen likes the guitar, drums and Doreen version of this song, but I thought that I’d post it using my arrangement.
It’s definitely true that Doreen’s voice is strong enough to carry the song without the added instrumentation.
Again, I want to thank you, D., for sweetening up “I Can’t Be Owned”.
I know you told me
that you love me and
you want to hold me.
Well, that’s fine but
don’t try to control me.
Can’t you see that I’m free?
Won’t you see that I can’t be owned?
You say you’d give me
anything if I’d
just say I’d marry.
That can’t be because
I have to live free.
Tell me how you want it now,
please don’t wait ‘cause I can’t be owned.
You go on your way,
let me be ‘cause I’m
living for each day.
Well I guess you
could say this is my way.
I’ll be here by myself
‘cause I know that I can’t be owned.
To friendship,
Michael

Thanks, LR. I appreciate your kind words.
I am indebted to Doreen for agreeing to work with me on recording this song.
I posted a bit of ancient history on another message board and I’ll post it hear as well.
Believe it or not, I wrote “I Can’t Be Owned” in 1973 when I was in a band and working with a girl – a girl then, now, of course, a very mature woman. She had written the lyrics to a number of songs to which I added music.
I did write the lyrics and music to “I Can’t Be Owned”, but I wrote the song with the intention of having her sing it. She did and did a very good job. It wasn’t intended to be sung by a man.
So I'm extremely grateful that Doreen agreed to record this song with me.
I’d love nothing better than to find that person so that I can ask permission to post the songs we co-wrote on this and other message boards. I’ve been trying to find her, but to no avail (Jean Trescott or the former Jean Trescott, if you see this, please get a hold of me).
A little ancient history.
Thanks, again, LR.
To friendship,
Michael
