Inspiration needed for Documentary piece on Hate

Post by Doreen Peri » November 18th, 2005, 5:51 pm

I've been asked by alienpoet, who is creating a documentary about hatred in the world, to create a spoken word piece set to music for the documentary.

I'm honored that she asked me and I need to get this written and recorded soon, but I'm having a difficult time getting inspired.

I love so much about being alive but there sure is a lot of hatred and I do hate hatred, so I have some notes going but the writing of this piece isn't coming out yet. And I have to write it before I can perform it and record it so ......

Maybe you all can help inspire me!

Tell me.... what do YOU hate about today's world?

Too much traffic? Long lines at the grocery store? Famine? War? Lies? Politics? Packaging materials which are difficult to open? Starvation? the Death Sentence? Your mother's attitude? The cost of gas? FEMA? Corporate power? The legal system? Power in the wrong hands? Stupidity? Incompetence? Disrespect? Arrogance? The polluted environment? Money? Violence? Technology? The fact that your dog has been so hard to train and still gnaws on the arms of your Foster Grants and soles of your Nike cross-trainers? Getting old? Cheap products which cost too much? Capitalism? Plastic wrap that sticks to itself so you can't use it? Minimum wage being too low? Beer that goes flat before you have time to finish it?

Help me out, OK?

Write what you hate about this world and I will be indebted... write it poetically or in prose or just make a list.

Beware, I may steal some of your words and combine them with my piece.

Thank you for your help!

Well, these two pieces always inspire, help, me ...

Two Wolves
A Cherokee Legend

An old Grandfather said to his grandson, who came to him with anger at a friend who had done him an injustice, "Let me tell you a story.

I too, at times, have felt a great hate for those that have taken so much, with no sorrow for what they do.

But hate wears you down, and does not hurt your enemy. It is like taking poison and wishing your enemy would die. I have struggled with these feelings many times." He continued, "It is as if there are two wolves inside me. One is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him, and does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will only fight when it is right to do so, and in the right way.

But the other wolf, ah! He is full of anger. The littlest thing will set him into a fit of temper. He fights everyone, all the time, for no reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so great. It is helpless anger, for his anger will change nothing.

Sometimes, it is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of them try to dominate my spirit."

The boy looked intently into his Grandfather's eyes and asked, "Which one wins, Grandfather?"

The Grandfather smiled and quietly said, "The one I feed."

Beware also of hating the man who hates. Remember that you are here to help him lift off his yoke, not to boast that you stagger under one of a nobler design.

I’ve always been amazed by the power of bigots and hate-mongers to arouse within me precisely the kind of hatred I despise within them. This is their real (if subconscious) agenda – not to further their race, culture, or beliefs, but to clone their inward misery in the consciousness of others, and thus feel less alone. Ultimately this is a self-defeating strategy, but it gains a little credence every time the hater can inspire any kind of hared within another person, regardless of whether it’s a hatred that supports or opposes his cause. To understand the hater, I need look no further than my revulsion in his presence. And I have to look at this revulsion steadily, continuously, courageously – until I see exactly how my own loneliness has crafted such a fearsome mask. Then I am a step closer to understanding how bigotry might be undone.

I hate what hate does to me, what it makes me, and what it makes me a party to.

I hate holding back the truth for fear of punishment, or injury, or loss of acceptance.

I hate that we cannot agree to disagree.

I hate it when power is only achieved by being cruel to humanity.

I hate war.

I hate the way hate sucks out my energy and shuts down my soul.

I hate not having an outlet for my loving heart to express it's self in.

I hate thinking about hate.

So i'm gonna stop.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with dearie!

I hate nothing
I hate my mind that is all too ready to connect the dots of random meaningless events and then jumps to brilliant conclusions that may or may not be right. I hate this disease called man. I hate myself because I am a true believer. A pawn in the gaime.

Nothing but vanity. Like George W Bush strutting and swaggering across the deck of an air craft carrier under a banner that says mission accomplished.
Lord help me Jesus I know what I am.
Sorry doreen nothing but rambles, nothing but rambles, my spirit is broke my mind's a joke. I hate it.

Hate is far too much work for me
I might muster indifference
but hate is too much trouble

hate requires effort
active participation
I'm too lazy for hate

I hate hate-yes. I don't hate people ...but there are people doing things i hate . I hate that judges let child molesters go free , i hate what drunk drivers do to others, i hate that there is tons and tons of money being sent up in space when starving ,homeless and dying people need it. I hate judging one another by skin color or tatoos or who they love . I hate lies that harm as in politics and wars .I hate that there are so many things to hate about this world -but we all have something we hate about it .Hate is a such a strong and ugly word isn't it?

Thanks, all...

I had posted a first draft of the poem to this thread but decided it wasn't even a first draft yet...

I've used input from all of you in it but it needs more work...

but, AP, LR has put a bed track down for me... bass and drums... hope to finish writing the text tonight and record it soon... getting it down, I will... and soon you'll read and hear it.

"Hate is a such a strong and ugly word isn't it?"

I might use that line... I like that line... it's so true!

(they have 3D TV? heh... who knew?)

Thanks for asking me to do this. If it ends up to be something you want to use, great! If not, that's ok, too. :)

OK. Here are the words I came up with. Thanks all for your inpiration!
Audio version coming soon.

_____________________

Some claim they hate traffic,
long lines at the grocery store.
I hate famine. Lies. Racism. War.

Hatred broods. It festers. Reflects no light.
Holds a grudge with a firearm sight.
Fat deep pockets sit stoic in an armored room.
Pockets lined with greed, plan doom.

There are wolves within.
Air currents set them into fits of temper.
They howl, they wail, they roar.
they wrawl, they yammer, they whine.
Fits of temper. Claims of the divine.

Many starve while stars & powers roll in bread.
Throw an dart on a map. Civilians dead.

Hatred sucks out energy – Shuts down the soul.
He is God of his own COLD religion.
Is it justified to torture him?
Some get down on their knees
and worship him.

Hatred is a rapist,
I abhor his cocked gun!
He is not done until his claws clutch your neck.
Abhor him! Ignore him!
He deserves no respect.

Look down on him with disdain.
What can he gain
if you find him detestable?
He is reprehensible.
Deserving of rebuke.
Nuke him quick.
Hatred is sick.

Neighbors hate neighbors for colors of skin.
Border battles. Which gang wins?
Sawed-off shotguns at a high school dance.
Insanity. Vanity. Dire circumstance.

The consequences to hatred are vast & wide.
A fatal insistence of pride.
Hatred is the vile enemy!
Smother him with love 'til he dies.
Which color is Hatred?
Paint him yellow like jaundiced skin.
There are wolves within.
Wolves within.

Strap a bomb on your back.
Blow him up.
Sufficate him with love, then run.
Mission done.
