What's up with this ...

Post by whimsicaldeb » March 7th, 2006, 1:18 pm

This is just too weird for me.

Want to see something strange: Do a search on google
http://www.google.com/

for this: gate6-norfolk.nmci.navy.mil

Then compare it to what you get when you use other "none-brand-name" search engines like

http://www.mamma.com/
and
http://www.dogpile.com/

....

then - go back to google and try a few of links to other places that they give in their original search; example - This is what I was given as the only result when I followed the link "Find web pages that link to gate6-norfolk.nmci.navy.mil" from my original google search:
SUCK MY DICK!!!!! Received from 200.203.143.74 (200.203.143.74) on ...
SUCK MY DICK!!!!! Received from 200.203.143.74 (200.203.143.74) on Tuesday 14th of February 2006 02:00:02 pm ----------------------------------Enter message ...
crcw.mb.ca/php3/ledsign/logs/log.html.160 - 302k - Cached - Similar pages

This is all just too strange to me ~ does anyone here know what they hell all this is? And why are the vast majority of the links on the search results all linking back to various message boards? I don't understand.

FYI ~ I found this .mil address and a second one as well, on my website logs and I'm trying to figure out why, what's up, etc.

Any help, info would be appreciated. Thanks!
Deb

ummm
So, in this case, the spammer, the troll(er) is the US Military- i.e Navy
???

also ... was checking out this HTTP/1.0" 302 334 on mama and found this: http://best.me.berkeley.edu/~jhey03/dev ... taphor.php

!
I like it ... again, don't know what the heck it's all about but 'best.me.berk' made more sense than anything in my logs (so far...)

no, it just means that the spammer is hiding his identity as .mil. the reason you found so few actual links to that shows that it's not also being used for any other reason than to troll forums. it's a disguise.

Thanks firsty ...

what's weird about finding this in my logs is I haven't had a forum hosted on my website for probably close to 2 years now. Maybe even longer ...

it's all so ... ~weird~

they spider thru web pages looking for places to post or just to leave a trail for you to hit from your stats page. they are evil and must die. all spammers and trolls must die with great violence, publicity and torture.

d, if you dont seem to have many new members, or if new members signing up is enough to handle cursory reviews, you can set it up so that new members arent allowed to post until you've approved them.

I did that for a while. About a week if I remember correctly. My email box was filled up with announcements of the new members I'd need to approve. Plus, Clay's email was also filled up and so was judih's. I suppose what the system does is send out an email to every person who has the rank of "admin." Judih liked it. I didn't. To me, it amounted to more work. too many clicks and a buncha emails to delete. Easier, imo, to just hit the member list every time I hit the site.

I'm pretty sure the problem with upgrading had to do with the ftp app i was using. Fetch would probably work fine. But I want to contact my host and see what they'd charge to move the database to the new location. That seems the best & easiest solution to me and I'm willing to pay for it. Will be in touch. thanks
