Well... black lacquer with silver knobs is the HOT item for today’s kitchen remodelings. This example uses dark charcoal gray that gives you an idea how great it can look.

NIce! Thanks, Deb!
I'm on a redecorating binge. Just got some new black tables for my living room.... Coffee table, end tables and a sofa table which I'm using on a wall with a mirror over it where my piano used to be. I gave the piano to my cousin. I'd had it for many years and I couldn't ever afford to get it refinished or tuned properly. It never held a tune. She wanted it so I gave it to her. It's a family heirloom.
The new decorating scheme is white walls, navy blue rug on a wood floor, brightly colored paintings and black furniture, all built around the idea that I'm going to buy a baby grand piano... black... next year or sooner if I hit the lottery or figure out how to finance it.
But I have these pieces.... a corner cabinet with the TV in it and an antique chest that belonged to my grandmother and I can't afford to replace the TV cabinet right now and I'm thinking my sister would die of a heart attack if I told her I was gonna paint the antique chest black but they just don't match and I want black so I thought I'd post this so I could find out whether other people thought I was nuts or whether it was only me who knew I was.
heh...
Great link.. thank you!

i'm worried about the chest and your sister's heart attack scenario.
Could you cover it with a throw? Is it something you open up all the time? What colour is it (i mean the chest, not your sister's chest) now?
Are we talking rounded pirate's chest, or square angled, brass cornered chest.
i definitely require further details.
As for the colour scheme in general, i adore Glenn's kitchen in deb's link. That dark thing going on with a touch of wood and metal is sublime.

Thanks Cecil!
I failed to mention that the couches are off-white... er... maybe beige.. (if that makes any difference.. lol)... and I have blue and burgandy accent pillows on them. Looks like the 4th of July. Geez... red white and blue. And I'm living with Clay? lol... who woulda thought he'd tolerate this!
judih... the trunk would be beautiful if it were refinished. It is mahogany or cherry, I think. It has some water stain marks on it and generally just needs to be refinished. I think it would look gorgeous black but my sister is a collector of antique furniture and she might disagree with me and want to either retain the distressed look or vote for getting it refinished in it's natural state. Maybe I'll take a picture of it and post it here. It's a pretty big chest... like a large trunk... maybe 4' long and 2' wide and comes up to knees. Inside, I have some family heirloom photos and other stuff I really either need to keep or pass along to another family member. I'm using it at the front window to put houseplants on. Cover it with a throw? Now that might work... I donno. Might want to restore it or pass it to a family member but definitely don't like the idea of Diane having a heart attack.
Maybe I'll email her or call her and present this black idea to her.
Thanks all for your posts... paint it black? I donno yet... but I do love that Stones tune. I can't stop singing it in my head.
Anybody heard from hester? just a subject change while I'm here. Miss her. and I'm upset that I screwed up her account. dammit

hester is here in spirit, i'm quite sure.
i'm back at school to work in privacy, away from the temptations and joys of being at home. (joy? what joy, why joy goes the puritan ethic that pulls me out of bed at 5:30 with the thought of coming to school during vacation)
the chest sounds quite remarkable. Cherry or mahogany are amazing woods...i think i am inching towards refinishing - bringing it back to the treasure it is rather than disguising it as a plant holder.
In any case, it's wonderful to re-work your space - you'll always be surprised when you walk in and things are different - i love that!

Yeah... (yep, yep, yep)
And I also like your idea J of covering the chest with a throw of some type; perhaps a black shawl. With antiques, painting them causes a deep drop in their value and natural woods are always preferred.
Doreen, it's soooooo true that decorating around family heirloom antiques is, and can be, a royal pain in the ass! And I know because I'm like you – all my antiques are hand-me-downs from both sides of my family, but unlike you I don’t have any other siblings I can pass them off too! I only have an older borther and he doesn't (nor does his wife) want anything to do with them. ~laughing~
But that's okay because in my heart, I don’t want too. Each piece has a family story, history, behind it and I can hear my mom or dad or aunt or uncle talking about them, sharing the history, the story of how these pieces came into our family, our lives. Since my mom and dad, and most of my aunts and uncles have passed … those pieces keep their voices, those stories and the happy memories alive and well… like a soft echo humming in the background that blends in with the present ones. When my living aunts and uncles and brother do come ~ they always notice and comment about them still being here, and a lot to times those background stories become alive and retold once again. A (re)bonding experience each time. So as difficult as they are to have, and keep, at times ... I'm glad I still have them.
My most recent decorating solution was to put in glass and metal coffee and end tables as the only ‘matching’ pieces, and metal sculptured wall art … as a means of pulling together all the various mixed woods (cherry mahogany oak) and time periods ~laughing~ and it seems to have worked. Besides, it fits my eclectic personality.
Doreen ~ have fun! Like Judih says ~ whatever you end up doing, you'll love that reworked space.

Thank you all for your participation in my reinvention of my space.
Because of all of your insightful posts, I've decided to give the chest to my cousin. She will have the funds to refinish it probably, more likely than I would and I think you're all right.... it should not be painted black. She's coming to pick it up Sunday.
And I'm going to go ahead and paint the corner cabinet black. It's a cheap piece. Can't ruin it. I bought it as unfinished furniture years ago and did a very sloppy stain job on it. Painting it will improve it, if anything.
Problems solved!
You all were very helpful!
And yes, I am enjoying recreating my space! Thank you!

yeah... as soon as I emailed her to ask her when she could come pick it up, I got a tinge of remorse. Then I went and opened it up to see what I had to empty out of it and admired the beautiful cedar lining. Sighhh... oh well... decision's made and she will enjoy it. I've had it for many years. Time to pass it along.
thanks, judih.. black lacquer paint awaits for the cheapo corner cabinet
